Senior Backend Software Engineer
About The Position
Every idea starts with a problem. Ours was simple: Boats are special — but they’re loud, pollutant, unreliable, and stuck in the past. Gas-powered boats dominate not because they’re great, but because no better option has existed. Until now. Arc is here to change that. We’re building 100% electric boats from the ground up — quicker, quieter, easier to maintain, and better for the water they ride on. We’re not just swapping gas for batteries. We’re rethinking every detail on the boat — from propulsion and powertrain to software and ownership model — applying first-principles engineering from aerospace and EVs to deliver a better boating experience. Electric boats haven’t taken over yet. The tech hasn’t been ready. The talent hasn’t been focused here. That’s our opportunity — and we’re moving fast. We're looking for someone excited by our vision, eager for a challenge, and willing to learn on the job. This is a full-time, on-site role at our manufacturing facility in Torrance, CA. You'll report to the Manager, Software Engineering and work closely with our Software Engineering team where everyone's work matters.
Requirements
- 5+ years of industry experience with expertise in at least one backend programming language (e.g., TypeScript, Python, Java, Go, Rust)
- Experience overseeing technical projects, including communicating with stakeholders, prioritizing high ROI features, driving towards a technical vision, and delegating workscope
- Proficiency with at least one cloud platform (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and DevOps best practices
- Deep understanding of API design and microservices architecture
- Demonstrated ability to optimize backend systems for performance, cost, and scale
- Excellent grasp of the fundamentals of software engineering and passion for developing high quality, maintainable software
Nice To Haves
- Experience with Amazon Web Services
- Familiarity with data processing and analytics tools (e.g., BigQuery, Apache Spark, Kafka)
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform)
- Experience with real-time data processing and IoT systems
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes and tools such as manufacturing execution systems (MESs)
- Experience with machine learning and predictive analytics
- Comfortable pushing at a fast but sustainable pace
- Enthusiasm for boating and the water
Responsibilities
- Designing, developing, and maintaining robust backend systems powering our boat infotainment systems and mobile app
- Building and optimizing data pipelines for ingesting, processing, and visualizing boat telemetry data
- Developing internal tools to improve our manufacturing processes
- Managing cloud resources and infrastructure
- Identifying opportunities to use software to accelerate the company's trajectory
