About The Position

The Senior Automation Technician is responsible for providing advanced technical support and troubleshooting for automation systems, with a focus on maximizing system performance and supporting the development of automation solutions. This role requires the ability to lead troubleshooting efforts both independently and in teams and recommend and implement system improvements. The Senior Automation Technician will also take a lead role in integrating and programming complex automation systems, including PLCs, robots, and vision systems, to optimize manufacturing and assembly equipment. Individuals will be considered a trainer amongst the team, providing guidance, technical support, and leadership to other technicians.

Requirements

  • 2-year associate's degree in a related field (e.g., Mechanical Engineering Technology, Robotics, Mechatronics, Controls, or other automation fields); OR 2 additional years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in automation and controls engineering.
  • Advanced technical courses or on the job training in related field.
  • Proficient user of moderately technical tools.
  • Recognized as a subject matter expert (SME) in areas of expertise.
  • Demonstrates strong communication, programming and troubleshooting skills.
  • Proficient computer and office software skills.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Ability to pass vision acuity test with or without reasonable accommodation.

Responsibilities

  • Leads and performs troubleshooting of automation system issues, including electrical, mechanical, and software problems.
  • Modifies, reverse engineers, and optimizes existing automation systems to improve functionality and performance.
  • Leads and performs routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs on automated equipment.
  • Maintains and enhances comprehensive documentation and report system performance regularly.
  • Supports and recommends improvements for automated system solutions, including electrical, controls, robotic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
  • Collaborates with engineers and peers to program PLCs, robots, and vision systems, integrating automation solutions into manufacturing and assembly equipment.
  • Understands product and process requirements to document system specifications, including design, installation, and testing for new automated equipment and systems.
  • Applies engineering theory, practices, and principles to perform failure analysis to determine root cause of equipment failures and conduct machinery performance evaluations.
  • Supports technical communication and quotations with 3rd party automation / integrator vendors.
  • Ensures compliance with safety standards and regulations for automated systems and equipment.
  • Proactively identifies opportunities for process improvements and system optimizations to enhance production efficiency and reduce downtime.
  • Collaborates cross-functionally with other groups such as Operations, IT, Sourcing, and other stakeholders as needed.
  • Provides technical support and trains others, providing guidance to ensure skill development across the team.
  • Participates in training and development activities to stay current with new automation technologies and industry best practices.
