The Atlantic is seeking a senior associate editor who will initially be assigned to join the Community Team, focusing on facilitating and moderating discussions among The Atlantic’s subscribers and journalists. The ideal candidate will be thoughtful, organized, and energized by fast-paced work and the desire to foster respectful conversations. The role initially will primarily require 10a to 7p EST, Monday thru Friday shift schedule, though The Atlantic reserves the right to unilaterally adjust that shit schedule during the course of employment to address business and/or editorial needs. The role will also involve occasional later nights, early mornings, and weekends. This editor will lead the Community team’s efforts to moderate comments on The Atlantic to uphold our guidelines and communicate decisions. The ideal candidate should therefore have prior experience with moderating comments, interacting with readers, and escalating as needed. This editor will also be integral in designing and building a social forum for Atlantic subscribers. As such, this role will at times include night, early-morning, and weekend work. The associate editor will also be counted upon to help senior editors brainstorm any and all elements of community at The Atlantic. Big ideas are encouraged, and an appetite for experimentation is necessary. This editor will be expected to collaborate with colleagues across the newsroom, as well as with peers from the product and growth teams, and other parts of The Atlantic’s business operation.
