About The Position

The Orange County Animal Services Department has an opening for a Senior Animal Control Officer.The work is primarily responsible for overseeing and participating in the enforcement of laws concerning the care and treatment of animals, to protect and rescue domesticated animals, and maintain public health standards. An employee in this class has the responsibility of overseeing and leading the work and activities of Animal Control Officers (ACO), Community Outreach and Education programs in the community and serving as the Lead Cruelty Investigator. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Animal Control Manager with considerable leeway to exercise independent judgment within the framework of applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures in the performance of duties, both in terms of planning and accomplishing work, and in making decisions regarding customer needs. This classification is distinguished from Animal Control Officer based on the complexity of case assignments and acting as lead to ACO staff. Supervision over others is not required of this position. Position does related work as required. This is a safety sensitive position and participation in the Drug and Alcohol Program is required. SBIBackground Check with fingerprints is required.Fitness for Duty Assessment is required. Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college with an Associate's Degree with coursework in animal science, animal behavior, euthanasia, zoology, or other animal-related areas AND three (3) years of work experience in animal control and welfare programs which includes the handling and restraining a variety of domesticated and non-domesticated animals; OR
  • Possession of a High School Diploma or GED AND five (5) years of work experience in animal control and welfare programs which includes the handling and restraining a variety of domesticated and non-domesticated animals.
  • Possession of Certification as a Cruelty Investigator and other national trainings such as the National Animal Control Association or a similar curriculum.
  • Possession of The Humane Society of the United States Certified Humane Education Specialist (CHES) program or completion of within six (6) months of employment.
  • Existing member or ability to join The Association of Professional Humane Educators (APHE).
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • All offers of employment are conditioned upon successful clearance of an SBI background check, drug screen and fitness test. Employment cannot commence until the employee has been cleared.
  • In accordance with Section 28 of the Orange County Code of Ordinances, and/or relevant State and Federal statutes, candidates for employment may be required to undergo fingerprinting and a criminal history background check based on the job responsibilities of the position. A fingerprinting check is conducted by the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) and a criminal history background check is conducted by an authorized Federal or State regulatory agency to determine eligibility for appointment. Employment is contingent upon successful clearance through these checks, which are mandated for certain roles depending on the nature of the job and applicable laws.
  • Further, all offers of employment are contingent upon the satisfactory verification of your eligibility for employment, successful completion of the required pre-employment testing and/or screening, including drug testing when required and the submission and approval of all new hire documentation completion of your new hire paperwork.
  • Must obtain a Certified Euthanasia Technician (CET) certification within one (1) year of hire.
  • Must have a flexible schedule.
  • Regular work schedule is Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
  • Working some evenings, weekends, holidays and inclement weather days required.
  • An employee in this classification is required to provide services on an on-call basis during evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays and during inclement weather on a rotational schedule.
  • Work involves driving an animal control vehicle and transporting live animals.
