About The Position

The Senior AI Learning Engineer designs, builds, and maintains AI-enabled learning assets that enhance course delivery and instructional experiences at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU). This role focuses on applied research, prototyping, and development of course-ready tools such as chatbots, simulations, assessments, and other digital learning objects in collaboration with instructional designers and subject-matter experts. This position requires strong technical and instructional design fluency, including the ability to evaluate emerging AI capabilities, translate instructional needs into functional prototypes, and produce reliable, reusable assets that can be implemented in courses and iterated over time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or related fields.
  • 3–5 years of work-related experience.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Background in computer science, technical expertise, or knowledge of coding.
  • Experience with generative AI, large language models (LLMs), prompt engineering, and AI ethics.
  • Demonstrated experience applying AI tools and techniques in instructional contexts.
  • Proven ability to lead projects and coordinate across multiple teams.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with instructional designers and subject-matter experts.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas), authoring tools, and learning analytics.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct applied research on generative AI, machine learning, and related techniques to identify opportunities for asset-development and instructional applications.
  • Design, develop, and implement AI-powered assets, prompt-and-tool workflows, and supporting components for learning experiences.
  • Build and test prototypes (e.g., chatbots, simulations, decision-support tools) and iterate toward production-ready assets.
  • Optimize existing AI assets for performance, scalability, reliability, and responsible use.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation (requirements, configurations, prompts, testing notes, and handoff materials) to support maintenance and reuse.
  • Contribute to development standards and best practices for AI-enabled assets (quality, safety, accessibility, and evaluation).
  • Collaborate with instructional designers and subject-matter experts to translate learning objectives into AI-enabled assignments, activities, and course assets.
  • Develop AI-enhanced learning objects including chatbots, simulations, assessments, interactive case activities, and supporting instructional materials.
  • Integrate assets into course builds and redesigns (e.g., Canvas) with attention to accessibility, usability, and ERAU quality standards.
  • Maintain and version reusable asset templates and components to support consistent implementation across courses and programs.
  • Plan and deliver AI-asset development work using clear requirements, milestones, testing plans, and release criteria.
  • Coordinate with internal partners to schedule reviews, track dependencies, and ensure timely delivery of course-ready assets.
  • Evaluate the impact of AI integration in ERAU courses using user feedback, learning analytics (when available), and structured testing to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Iterate and maintain assets based on evaluation findings, issue reports, and evolving course needs.
  • Contribute to scholarship or internal research related to AI-enabled learning assets, instructional design, and learning sciences.
