A Day in the Life Join Medtronic’s New Product Development team as a Senior Manufacturing Engineer, where you’ll play a pivotal role in the development and launch of complex surgical devices. You’ll provide technical expertise in materials selection, tool fabrication, and process equipment design to support the manufacturing of metal components and subassemblies. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams—including R&D, Sourcing, Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and suppliers—you’ll help drive projects from concept through qualification and launch, optimizing manufacturability, functionality, cost, and quality at every step. Work environments include standard office settings, clean room manufacturing areas, model shops, and supplier manufacturing facilities. Up to 20% travel may be required.

Requirements

  • Requires a Baccalaureate degree and minimum of 4 years of relevant experience OR Master's degree with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience OR PhD with 0 years relevant experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with stamping, CNC machining, MIM, powdered metal, casting, and zinc die casting processes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of DFMEA and PFMEA.
  • Proficiency in GD&T, DFM, and DFA principles.
  • Significant experience with medium to high volume component and subassembly manufacturing best practices.
  • Strong background in statistical analysis, including process capability, process control, DOE, and inspection design.
  • In-depth understanding of Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) for component qualification.
  • Exceptional project management and team leadership skills.
  • Ability to work effectively across global business units.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Advanced computer skills (Microsoft Office, Project, Minitab).
  • 3D modeling/CAD experience (Creo preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Lead collaborative Design for Manufacturability (DFM) efforts, analyzing component designs for manufacturability, identifying cost or quality risks, and driving effective resolutions prior to tooling purchase.
  • Participate in Capital Authorization Requests (CAR) for component tooling and related test/inspection fixtures, ensuring alignment with product cost targets and capacity needs.
  • Provide engineering cost estimates for production components and subassemblies, leveraging expertise in materials and processing costs for project business studies.
  • Specify material selections and design features to balance functionality, manufacturability, and cost, based on product design and component interactions.
  • Engage in cross-functional meetings (R&D, AME, Sourcing, Quality) to ensure robust component development processes, including design FMEA reviews.
  • Support Early Supplier Involvement (ESI) technical meetings, documenting agreements, identifying risks, and driving closure of open action items.
  • Contribute to supplier selection, defining tooling and manufacturing process strategies, assessing capabilities, and mitigating risks.
  • Partner strategically with suppliers for tooling design, fabrication, and part qualification, ensuring technical rigor and providing project management support.
  • Generate electronic purchase requisitions for capital tooling and production process qualification, based on supplier quotations.
  • Collaborate with Quality, Sourcing, and R&D to plan, execute, review, and approve PPAP submissions.
  • Review and approve supplier tool designs prior to fabrication.
  • Execute component engineering deliverables for product transfer from New Product Development to manufacturing plants and enterprise entities.
  • Advise management on risks or developments that could impact project timelines or standard costs.
