About The Position

The Girl Scouts Senior Accountant safeguards the resources and reputation of the Council by directing and coordinating the organization’s accounting functions. The position supports continuous process improvement using available tools and technology while maintaining GAAP compliance and adherence to best practices for nonprofit organizations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • 3 to 5 years’ accounting experience required, nonprofit experience preferred, to include expertise in accounting systems, financial reporting, and auditing.
  • Proficiency with GL accounting, banking, A/R, A/P, month end journal entries and statements, payroll entries, year-end processes, reporting, and audit support.
  • Confidence and proficiency using Microsoft Office products, particularly Excel, and MIP Accounting (Abila cloud version) or similar software is preferred.
  • Knowledge or ability to learn different online financial systems, such as point of sale, A/R (NetSuite), payment and credit card processing.
  • Pride in achieving personal and team goals.
  • Motivated by the Girl Scout mission.
  • Engaging communication style, verbal and written – Spanish speaking is a plus.
  • To successfully perform the essential functions of this role, with or without accommodation, a person must be able to utilize basic office equipment including computers and phones.
  • If working from home, we require a private, quiet workspace with high speed / stable internet connection.

Responsibilities

  • Reconciling sub-ledgers to general ledger account balances
  • Overseeing month-end and year-end close processes and checklists
  • Preparing financial statements, journal entries and account reconciliations
  • Ensuring proper internal controls through regular assessment and evaluation
  • Assisting with budget preparation and preparing the monthly budget variance analyses
  • Maintaining and reconciling fixed assets schedules
  • Collaborating with VP of Finance and Finance Team members to improve processes, accuracy, and efficiency
  • Accounting, reporting, and assisting with budgeting for the Council’s grant portfolio
  • Maintains control over the general ledger and accounting information systems.
  • Oversees financial close of periods and preparation of financial statements.
  • Performs complex reconciliations.
  • Prepares budget vs. actual performance reports to Council leadership staff.
  • Investigates and resolves issues.
  • Oversees sales tax return filings, 1099 preparation, and other federal and state tax and reporting requirements.
  • Collaborates with VP of Finance in maintaining internal controls to assure sound fiscal responsibility.
  • Partners with VP of Finance to develop new processes and procedures for improved efficiency throughout the Council.
  • Collaborate with the VP of Finance to prepare for the annual external audit ensuring timely resolution of audit requests and findings.
  • Maintains the Council's Chart of Accounts, standalone accounting systems, and subledgers.
  • Develops and maintains financial and accounting policies and procedures.
  • Oversee the monitoring of grant funding fiscal requirements, track spending and compliance, and submit the financial reporting to grant funders.
  • Oversight of accounts payable processing and issuing of payments to vendors.
  • Oversight of payroll processing.
  • Assists with the annual budgeting process.
  • Provides technical support for both internal and external users of Council’s financial data.
  • Provides training in accounting systems and processes, as needed.
  • Provides banking and financial management support to troop and service unit volunteers.
  • Provides direction and support services for all accounting functions including accounts receivable and accounts payable, product sales, and retail sales.
  • In collaboration with VP of Finance, provide Finance Team members with the tools, training and coaching that lead to success in their roles.
