The Senior Accountant plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity of financial systems and reporting. This individual is responsible for preparing and reviewing journal entries, reconciling complex accounts, ensuring compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards, and supporting audits and grant reporting. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Minimum 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years in nonprofit accounting.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting
  • Experience with grant and contract reporting and compliance.
  • Proficiency in accounting systems (e.g., Intacct, NetSuite, Blackbaud, or similar).
  • Strong Excel skills and ability to work with large data sets.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA or equivalent certification.
  • Experience in a mid-to-large nonprofit (budgets over $20M).
  • Experience working in organizations advancing racial equity, human rights, or other social justice causes.
  • Experience working in multi-entity organizations with a 501c(3) and 501c(4)

Responsibilities

  • General Accounting & Reporting
  • Prepare and review journal entries and monthly general ledger reconciliations.
  • Ensure accurate and timely month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements in compliance with GAAP and funder requirements.
  • Maintain and reconcile balance sheet accounts, including cash, fixed assets, receivables, and liabilities.
  • Grants & Restricted Funds Management
  • Track restricted and unrestricted funds and ensure proper allocation and compliance with donor restrictions.
  • Support grant reporting and ensure expenditure aligns with grant budgets and timelines.
  • Collaborate with program and development teams to monitor grant activity and reporting schedules.
  • Audit & Compliance
  • Support the annual external audit, including preparation of audit schedules and responding to auditor inquiries.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including IRS 990 reporting requirements.
  • Maintain internal controls and recommend improvements to processes and policies.
  • Systems & Process Improvement
  • Assist in optimizing financial systems, tools, and workflows for improved efficiency and accuracy.
  • Help implement financial policies and procedures that align with best practices in nonprofit finance.
