About The Position

The Senior Accountant reports to and collaborates with the Controller to perform a range of technical and professional accounting tasks and support functions, including accounts payable and receivable, payroll, general ledger, cost allocations, financial and cash reports and statements, grants management, and budgeting. The Senior Accountant may also support 603 Legal Aid’s human resources work.

Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent education, training, or experience.
3-5 years of accounting experience with duties equivalent to those described above.
Excellent knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and fundamental accounting principles.
Familiarity with federal cost principles, in particular 2 CFR 200.
Ability to propose and implement technology and fiscal innovations to improve organizational effectiveness.
Advanced proficiency in computer technology, including Microsoft Office Suite and client database systems.
Moderate to advanced Excel skills managing large datasets with functions. IF, SUM, INDEX, MATCH, VLOOKUP, Pivot tables, etc.
Superior attention to detail and highly accurate work product, along with the ability for self-review of work to identify errors and correct promptly.
Ability to gather and analyze data and prepare and maintain accurate and timely reports, charts, statistical analyses, memoranda, letters, and responses to requests for information.
Exceptional analytical skills in financial analysis, interpreting and understanding accounting and grant compliance and regulations, and other business activities.
Ability to communicate and present financial information effectively, both in a verbal and written manner to varied audiences.
Strong organizational, time management, and project management abilities.
Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups, including clients, staff, board members, and external partners.

Nice To Haves

Experience with QuickBooks Online is preferred.
Experience working for a non-profit organization is strongly preferred.
Experience with grant writing, reporting, and fundraising is highly valued.

Responsibilities

Prepare cash disbursements, payroll, bank transaction entry, credit card transaction entry and reconciliation, other general ledger reconciliations, journal entries, and other month-end close tasks, including cost allocations.
Oversee accounts payable.
Provide timekeeping oversight and guidance to staff.
Manage the 403(b) payroll submissions and annual compliance testing.
Initiate and track employee benefit changes, personnel, payroll, taxes, deductions, direct deposits, and other insurance changes.
Generate organizational, grant, and other ad hoc reports along with review and analysis of underlying transactions.
Prepare financial statements and budget analysis for Quarterly Finance Committee Meetings.
Attend Finance Committee Meetings.
Assist in the preparation of annual audit documentation, including reconciliations and requested policies/ documents.
Work with auditors during the annual audit, including responding to requests, inquiries, and providing support to the Controller.
Provide financial oversight of program grants.
Read and interpret contracts and grants and identify and document information pertinent to finance and accounting.
Manage submission deadlines and report compliance with all program grants.
Work with grantors and assist the controller with the financial portion of grant reviews.
Assist with budget development and spending projections throughout the fiscal year at grant-specific and organization-wide levels.
Lead monthly grant meetings for various departments/ programs to discuss budgets vs. actuals and forecasting.
Research and document variances to budgets, including grant budgets and organization budgets.
Continuously assess and adhere to accounting policies, internal controls, and best practices.
Develop and maintain system procedures and documentation, including Standard Operating Procedure documentation as assigned.
Assist with forecasting, gathering information, conducting research, analyzing data, identifying trends, and preparing a variety of reports and statements.
Maintain confidential records and process and transmit information that requires a high degree of discretion.
Keep apprised of new developments in the field and current issues through regulatory reports and continued education and professional growth.
Research and troubleshoot technical accounting problems.
Support program human resources functions as assigned.
Perform other tasks and duties as assigned or required.
