Job Summary Senior Accountant performs complex accounting work requiring in-depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and/or regulatory accounting. This position prepares moderately complex financial and statistical reports, including financial statements and related notes for regulatory agencies, management, and others. What you will do Coordinates accounting processes, procedures, and reporting and/or develops accounting schedules, analyzes account balances, and analyzes and maintains accounting records in accordance with GAAP, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regulatory requirements, and company procedures. Maintains the general ledger and prepares moderately complex financial statements and related reports and analyses and other accounting-related duties for assigned functional areas or business segments. Analyzes and reviews variances in financial results from budget and prior periods. Works on problems that are substantially varied, complex, and broad in nature to facilitate continuous improvement and identify new ways of utilizing existing resources when preparing source input, parameter tables, and other details of the financial accounting system, financial reports, and other accounting-related reports. Relies on experience to apply independent judgment when making recommendations for accounting adjustments, procedural changes, and compliance with company procedures and various federal, state, and local regulations in all areas. Leads responses to requests from regulatory bodies for accounting information and providing financial information to support regulatory and other audits. Reviews work performed by Accountant I and Accountant II team members for accuracy and completeness. Leads research and implementation of regulatory and GAAP accounting requirements. Keeps fully informed of current developments in the accounting field, industry, regulations, and company procedures as these applies to assigned work areas and the department in general. Advocates for change and assists the team in developing creative solutions to simplify and streamline finance activities. Assists in the performance, development, and maintenance of internal controls that ensure proper, accurate, and timely recording of transactions and protection of assets. Engage in other duties as needed that support Alliant Energy’s Values and help deliver on our Purpose to serve customers and build stronger communities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Business, Accounting, or related field.
  • 5 years of experience in accounting.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of accounting principles, theories, practices, and procedures of the utility industry.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to use computer software programs (e.g., e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, and project management).
  • Knowledge of common accounting software applications preferred.
  • Working knowledge of basic project management concepts and processes.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
