About The Position

The Senior Accountant supports the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial reporting by leading general ledger activities, account reconciliations, and month-end close processes. This role ensures strong internal controls, supports audit readiness, and contributes to financial system and process improvements. The Senior Accountant plays a key role in maintaining accounting operations, supporting Sage Intacct financial system processes, and improving finance workflows to support organizational goals. This position supports responsible stewardship of organizational resources and contributes to financial transparency in support of Animal Humane Society’s mission.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • 3+ years of accounting experience required.
  • Experience with financial reporting and reconciliations required.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Reliable transportation required.
  • Regular, predictable attendance, punctuality, and availability to work during operational hours.
  • Attend and participate in regular team meetings, all staff meetings, and one-on-one meetings with direct leader.
  • May be required to work at a different site based on department needs.
  • May be required to attend occasional off-site meetings and events.
  • Must be comfortable with the emotional aspect of work in an animal shelter environment, including the use of humane euthanasia.
  • Prolonged sitting at a desk.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 10 lbs.

Nice To Haves

  • Nonprofit accounting experience preferred.
  • ERP experience preferred (Sage Intacct preferred).
  • Experience supporting audits preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review journal entries and supporting documentation.
  • Maintain general ledger accuracy and account integrity.
  • Perform complex balance sheet reconciliations and resolve variances.
  • Prepare and review monthly and year-end financial statements.
  • Analyze financial results and investigate variances.
  • Maintain supporting schedules and documentation for financial activity.
  • Support accounting for restricted funds, grants, and donor contributions as applicable.
  • Maintain fixed asset accounting and related schedules.
  • Assist with development and maintenance of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Lead assigned portions of the monthly and annual close process.
  • Monitor close timelines and ensure completion of deliverables.
  • Prepare accruals and adjusting entries.
  • Review transaction activity for accuracy and completeness.
  • Document and improve close procedures.
  • Support financial review and reporting processes.
  • Ensure transactions follow established approval and posting workflows.
  • Maintain and support internal control processes.
  • Support segregation of duties and audit trail integrity.
  • Identify control risks and recommend process improvements.
  • Prepare audit schedules and assist with external audit requests.
  • Support compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Support Sage Intacct financial system operations and optimization.
  • Assist with ERP implementation activities, testing, and process documentation.
  • Support chart of accounts and dimension structure maintenance.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and reporting efficiency.
  • Support implementation of new finance workflows and procedures.
  • Provide guidance to accounting staff on transaction processing and procedures.
  • Review work and support accuracy of financial data.
  • Collaborate with departments to resolve accounting questions.
  • Support training on finance processes and system use.
  • Communicate in a positive and professional manner with customers, employees, and volunteers.
  • Promote a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Utilize financial systems and reporting tools for accounting operations.
  • Support data integrity within financial systems.
  • Other duties as assigned.
