The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) intends to hire for two positions at either the Academic Advisor or Senior Academic Advisor based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) Academic Advisors provide academic advising to students and advising-based perspectives to university colleagues and public stakeholders, such as students, family members and prospective students. Advisors integrate interpersonal and communication skills with knowledge of curricula, policies (departmental, collegiate, and University), resources, and student development to help students identify options, set academic and developmental goals, and make progress toward those goals. They gather data and collaborate with colleges and academic programs on matters that impact student recruitment, success, and retention. Advisors also administer, advocate for, or take a leadership role in programs and initiatives that facilitate student transition, success, and retention or that enhance the overall process of academic advising at the University. CLAS academic advisors play a crucial role in the success of our students. They guide students through their university journey and are dedicated to creating a welcoming and supportive educational environment. Advisors engage with students through both in-person and Zoom meetings, focusing on academic planning, goal setting, and encouraging involvement in opportunities and resources that enhance both their college experience and future career success. They collaborate with the career center to help students identify potential career paths and assist those facing academic challenges. In addition, CLAS advisors actively participate in retention and graduation initiatives and work closely with students facing academic challenges. They play a key role in welcoming and assisting transfer students during orientation to ensure a smooth transition to the University of Iowa. Advisors collaborate with faculty and staff within their departments. Advisors support one another through cross-training, programming, and staff development. They are also involved in various committees dedicated to enhancing the advising experience. Furthermore, advisors engage in weekly and monthly developmental activities, fostering a sense of community within the College. They participate in important events such as commencement and recruitment, contributing to the overall success of our students.
