About The Position

New York Edge is seeking highly organized, detail-oriented, and responsible individuals to join our team as SEL Coaches. This part-time role is an excellent opportunity for professionals passionate about supporting students' social and emotional development within an urban educational environment. To be eligible, candidates must have successfully completed the Home of Little Wanderers Mental Health First Aid Certification Program. As an SEL Coach, you will participate in the year-round New York Edge SEL Train-the-Trainer program, provided by ACT (Mosaic), the Home of Little Wanderers, and the Teach Rock Harmony Program. You will be matched with a portfolio of sites to support the implementation of SEL programming during afterschool hours, ensuring that each site administers pre- and post-assessments and utilizes the Mosaic by ACT curriculum effectively. In this role, you will collaborate with program staff, teachers, and other stakeholders to manage an SEL referral system, connecting students and parents to appropriate supports, including individual and group therapy, counseling, and additional family resources. You will also work alongside a team of certified clinicians to monitor and support your assigned portfolio of sites.

Requirements

  • Completion of the Home of Little Wanderers Mental Health First Aid Certification.
  • Ability to attend and actively participate in year-round SEL training sessions.
  • Proven success working with students who exhibit academic, social, and emotional challenges, including those with special needs and those from high-poverty backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of or ability to make referrals for students in need of additional services or alternative placements.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
  • Strong understanding of child development and behavior.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with colleagues, parents, students, and the community.
  • Commitment to continuous professional growth through ongoing professional development, education, and engagement with professional literature.

Nice To Haves

  • College credits and/or degrees are highly preferred.
  • Mental Health First Aid Certification.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience working with youth in an urban environment.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Drive, and database management.

Responsibilities

  • Provide referrals for counseling support to students and families, both individually and in group settings.
  • Support the assessment of child mental health needs and implement short-term, frequent, and strategic interventions.
  • Collaborate with teachers to promote social and emotional competence in the classroom.
  • Participate in regular SEL professional development, reflective practice, professional organizations, peer coaching, and group work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall success of the SEL program.
