The Department of Buildings & General Services (BGS) Safety & Security team protects employees, visitors, and property across state-owned and leased facilities throughout Vermont. Within that team, the Security Systems Unit does hands-on, in-the-field work installing, maintaining, and repairing physical security equipment in approximately 150 buildings statewide, including correctional facilities, public safety buildings, and administrative offices. This role will be responsible for installation and maintenance work including running conduit and cable, mounting hardware, working on ladders and lifts, and troubleshooting equipment on site. The Specialist also installs and services card access hardware, cameras, door controls, alarms, intercoms, and related infrastructure, ensuring systems are reliable, code-compliant, and built to last. Work is performed in active buildings, often in coordination with contractors, electricians, and building occupants. This is a trades-oriented position and we’re looking for someone who takes pride in building and maintaining physical systems. From assessing site conditions and laying out equipment placement to completing installs and ongoing repairs, this role sees projects through from start to finish. The work requires strong mechanical aptitude, comfort using tools and ladders, and the ability to independently diagnose and resolve issues in the field.
