About The Position

This position operates within the Security Operations Center (SOC) and is cross-trained with a dotted-line operational relationship to the Security Technology Services (STS) team. The SOC Security Specialist serves as the technology systems expert for the tools, platforms, and workflows that power the enterprise SOC. This role ensures alignment between SOC operations, security technology development, and enterprise optimization initiatives. The Specialist is considered a member of the SOC Leadership Team, working alongside the SOC Day Supervisor, SOC Night Supervisor, and reporting directly to the SOC Manager . Although this role does not have direct supervisory responsibilities, it holds significant influence through project leadership, workflow development, and cross-departmental coordination. Security Specialists provide security services for the assigned program (e.g., threat assessment/management, intelligence, security technology, executive protection, workplace violence, education and training) or special projects/assignments to all Mayo functions and entities, and to external clients as directed. Security Specialists may also be required to research or revise security-related policies, procedures or standards. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with three years of progressively responsible security experience or associates degree with five years of progressively responsible security experience or HS/GED with seven years of progressively responsible security experience.
  • For assignment to executive protection: must be a graduate of an accredited law enforcement academy or graduate of an executive protection professional course with equivalent experience; must not be prohibited from possessing a firearm under state or federal law; must qualify with an issued or authorized to carry handgun; must be legally eligible to obtain a state concealed carry firearm permit, where applicable; must be security clearance eligible.
  • Security Specialists must demonstrate strong ability in leadership, personal interaction, time management, and project administration, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record in accordance with Mayo Clinic Policy.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Protection Professional (CPP) designation, or equivalent, required within two years of date of employment

Responsibilities

  • Operational & Technical Expertise Serve as the system expert for SOC technology, ensuring effective use, troubleshooting, optimization, and user guidance.
  • Lead the SOC’s rapid response to technology issues, ensuring timely escalation, communication, and interim workarounds.
  • Align SOC workflows with evolving technology solutions, ensuring operational consistency and efficiency.
  • Cross‑Department Coordination & Liaison Role Act as the primary coordinator and point of contact (POC) for technical collaboration with the STS team .
  • Not responsible for performing the technical work directly, but responsible for ensuring clarity, coordination, and partnership between SOC and STS.
  • Represent SOC operational needs during STS security technology optimization projects.
  • Ensure SOC requirements, constraints, and best practices are fully communicated and integrated into technical development efforts.
  • Project Leadership Lead SOC‑specific and enterprise security technology projects.
  • Serve as SOC project SME for initiatives involving system upgrades, platform integrations, optimization efforts, or workflow redesign.
  • Coordinate project timelines, deliverables, documentation, and communication with stakeholders.
  • Process, Workflow, and Program Development Develop, refine, and maintain SOC workflows, swim lanes, and process documentation.
  • Lead SOC involvement in the Panic Alarm Testing Program, including scheduling, documentation, and reporting.
  • Support creation of Quick Reference Guides (QRGs), backup plans, contingency procedures, and cross‑training materials.
  • On‑Call Support May participate in limited on‑call responsibilities to support urgent SOC technology or workflow needs, with the long‑term intent to build scalable support structures and documented QRGs to minimize overnight disruptions.
