About The Position

The Security Services Supervisor provides leadership, coordination, and day-to-day direction for the School Security Officers (SSOs), and coordinates post orders with the Contracted Security Officers (CSOs) assigned to the various locations in the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS). The Supervisor ensures school safety and security at all times, including during after-school activities. The Supervisor, in addition to the duties listed above, must meet all requirements that an SSO must meet. The Supervisor works under the direction of the Assistant Director of Safety and Security Services. The Supervisor has the responsibility for ensuring that a safe and secure learning environment is established for students, faculty, staff, and the community. The Supervisor is to work with the SSOs, school staff, and students to maintain order and discipline in the school. This position is considered an Essential Employee requiring 24/7 availability.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience. Equivalent experience is defined as progressively responsible experience in supervision, preferably in the law enforcement field or military. Two years of experience is generally considered equivalent to one year of college.
Valid Driver’s License and copy of the driving record
VA Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), School Security Officer (SSO) Certification within 60 days of hire
SSO Trainer Certification obtained within 6 months of hire
Continued SSO recertification (every 2 years)
First Aid training (within 60 days of hire)
Maintain a valid mailing address and notify ACPS within 10 days of any change
Notify ACPS within 72 hours, or the next business day, of any arrest
Notify ACPS within 10 days of being found guilty by any court or administrative body
Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
Tuberculosis Skin Test.
Public Health Compliance
Must follow safety and health protocols.

Responsibilities

Keeps Assistant Director informed of all security personnel related matters.
Communicates when necessary with police and fire departments to address immediate safety concerns and emergency situations.
Communicates school policies and enforcement procedures to students, personnel, and visitors to ensure their understanding and the potential consequences of violation.
Intervenes in potential conflicts to minimize disruptions of campus property.
Keeps detailed logs of all events, calls, and radio contacts.
Monitors students between assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g. restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, library, cafeteria, etc.) to ensure the safety and welfare of students.
Operates and monitors electronic devices including both audio and visual alarms, and other surveillance devices.
Must be able to operate an ACPS vehicle in a safe and legal manner.
Operates the communications systems, radios, and leased lines.
Patrols Board property as assigned to provide for the safety and welfare of students, school personnel, and visitors.
Prepares documentation (e.g. incident and activity reports, security logs, etc.).
Refers incidents to appropriate site personnel (e.g. injuries, altercations, suspicious activities, etc.) to ensure follow-up in accordance with administrative guidelines.
Reports observations and incidents relating to specific students (e.g. accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, etc.) to appropriate instructional and/or administrative personnel for follow-up action.
Responds to emergency situations to address immediate safety concerns.
Has a strong desire to work with school-aged youth, professional educators, law enforcement personnel, and citizens in the community.
Must relate effectively to school administrators, faculty, staff, students, law enforcement personnel, and citizens in the community.
Must adhere to the SSO dress code prescribed by the Director of Safety and Security Services.
Must model appropriate behavior for students and staff to emulate.
Must understand the terms and conditions of employment as an SSO.
Must be able to use a computer and check email.
Works a flexible schedule to accommodate job requirements including emergencies, nighttime, weekend, and holiday duties.
Plans develop, implements and maintain school safety and security operation to ensure a safe environment for students, staff, and community members using school facilities.
Implements and oversees safety and security policies and regulations.
Maintains a working relationship with police, fire, and other safety and security-related organizations to ensure their assistance in dealing with problems and in the prevention of potential problems at the schools.
Communicates with the community through written correspondence, telephone calls, and personal visits, preparing correspondence for and makes presentations on behalf of the superintendent, executive team, and Board of Education members on request.
Evaluates school safety and security programs, recommending changes.
Prioritizes and responds to request from principals and other staff regarding school safety and security matters.
Develops and implements safety and security in-service training programs.
Conducts state-mandated training to ensure compliance with state training regulations.
Conducts informational sessions for faculty, staff, students, and parents on security issues and topics.
Reviews all serious incident reports and takes action when appropriate.
Develops standard operating procedures for school and centrally based safety and security staff.
Maintains an incident reporting system.
Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
