About The Position

UPMC Somerset is seeking a dedicated Security Officer to help maintain a safe, welcoming, and secure environment for our patients, visitors, and staff. You’ll join a supportive, close‑knit group—many of whom are retired law enforcement professionals—who bring strong teamwork, trust, and camaraderie to the department. This full-time role features 12-hour rotating shifts (7 AM – 7 PM & 7 PM – 7 AM) with rotating weekends and holidays. We also offer a $1,500 sign-on bonus with a 2‑year commitment, recognizing the valuable contribution you make from your very first day. As a Security Officer, you will establish a professional, uniformed presence throughout UPMC property by patrolling hospital buildings, grounds, and adjacent areas to deter criminal activity. You’ll respond to alarms, resolve disputes and unusual situations, assist patients and visitors, monitor access points, handle vehicle and traffic support, conduct escorts, and complete thorough incident documentation. Your role directly supports the safety and comfort of everyone who enters our facilities.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Psychological fitness required.
  • Physical fitness requirements that require full body motion and physical strength and stamina.
  • Officers are required to wear a bullet proof vest.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required within 30 days of hire.
  • Driver's License
  • UPMC Physical Fitness Standard
  • Act 235 with Firearms with renewal
  • All officers hired without a valid Act 235 must complete the 235 certification within their first 6 months of hire or placement and have process completed within 9 months of hire
  • Must meet audio and visual standards outlined in Act 235 at time of hire.
  • Act 235 without Firearms with renewal
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal

Responsibilities

  • Patrol hospital buildings, grounds, and surrounding areas to deter criminal activity.
  • Monitor security, fire, and environmental alarms; respond and assist as needed.
  • Staff fixed posts and oversee access to secured areas.
  • Provide customer service to patients, families, visitors, and staff.
  • Inspect parcels as necessary to prevent theft.
  • Respond to disputes, unusual circumstances, and safety concerns.
  • Assist with vehicle support and traffic control.
  • Transport deceased individuals to/from the morgue.
  • Conduct patient escorts and stand-by safety details.
  • Operate UPMC vehicles in accordance with PA Vehicle Code.
  • Complete required documentation and incident reporting.
  • Maintain all mandatory training and certifications.
