About The Position

Security Officers at the New Museum play a critical role in maintaining a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all. Security Officers are responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the museum’s visitors, staff, exhibits, and property. This role involves patrolling galleries and non-public areas, responding to emergencies and reporting incidents, and providing excellent customer service to museum visitors. Security Officers must always maintain a welcoming and alert demeanor while on duty. This position requires a balance of vigilance and hospitality, ensuring the protection of the museum’s exhibitions and spaces.

Requirements

  • Valid New York State Security Guard license.
  • Valid F03 and S95 FDNY license.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Strong observational and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to remain composed in high-pressure situations.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, sit, and climb stairs for extended periods.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in security, customer service, or a public-facing role preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol assigned area to ensure the safety of people, artwork and property.
  • Monitor CCTV, fire alarm panels, and access control systems when assigned to the Security Console.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to incidents, emergencies, and alarms.
  • Enforce museum policies while maintaining a visitor-friendly approach.
  • Provide clear and courteous assistance to guests, including directions and information about exhibitions.
  • Observe and report any suspicious activity, safety concerns, or maintenance issues.
  • Complete detailed and accurate incident reports.
  • Perform crowd management during public programs, openings, and special events.
  • Collaborate with the Visitor Experience team and other departments to enhance the overall visitor experience.
  • Collaborate with local law enforcement and emergency services when necessary.
  • Participate in regular safety drills and training sessions to ensure preparedness and compliance with safety protocols.
