About The Position

Security Officers at the New Museum play a critical role in maintaining a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all. Security Officers are responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the museum’s visitors, staff, exhibits, and property.  This role involves patrolling galleries and non-public areas and working at the security console. Responding to emergencies, reporting incidents and providing excellent customer service to museum visitors are also key responsibilities. Security Officers must always maintain a welcoming and alert demeanor while on duty. This position requires a balance of vigilance and hospitality, ensuring the protection of the museum’s exhibitions and spaces.

Requirements

  • Must possess a valid New York State Security Guard license.
  • Must possess a valid Fire and Life Safety Director (FLSD) certification and be able to pass an FDNY onsite exam. F-89, N-85, Z-89 are all acceptable.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Prior experience in security, customer service, or a public-facing role preferred.
  • Strong observational and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to remain composed in high-pressure situations.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, sit, and climb stairs for extended periods.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays

Responsibilities

  • Patrol assigned area to ensure the safety of people, artwork and property.
  • Monitor CCTV, fire alarm panels, and access control systems from the Security Console.
  • Respond to alarms, emergencies, and incidents in a timely manner.
  • Enforce museum policies while maintaining a visitor-friendly approach.
  • Provide clear and courteous assistance to guests, including directions and information about exhibitions.
  • Observe and report any suspicious activity, safety concerns, or maintenance issues.
  • Submit detailed and accurate reports.
  • Perform crowd management during public programs, openings, and special events.
  • Collaborate with the Visitor Experience team and other departments to enhance the overall visitor experience.
  • Collaborate with local law enforcement and emergency services when necessary.
  • Be familiar with the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and participate in regular safety drills and training sessions to ensure preparedness and compliance with safety protocols.
