About The Position

This position coordinates and supports the work of the Board. This position contracts with and reports to the Board and Superintendent, assisting them in meeting and analyzing District goals and objectives. This position fulfills the statutory requirements for Secretary to the Board and facilitates communication between the B oard and the Superintendent, administrative staff, legal counsel, the chief negotiator for the D istrict, and external agencies as appropriate. Upon the direction of the Board n and the Superintendent, this position has the authority to have support staff and to enter into contracts with external agencies to assist in meeting the duties of the office. The Superintendent and the Board will participate jointly in the performance evaluation of the Board Secretary .

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Master’s Degree in educational administration, business administration or a related field.
  • Valid Nebraska Teaching Certificate with endorsement in area of administration and supervision required.
  • Track record of collaboration.
  • Possess excellent communication skills.
  • Be able to effectively collect and present information that will lead to improvements throughout the school system.
  • Familiarity with district policies and organizational structures .
  • Be able to multi-task and coordinate schedules, materials, and high priority logistics with tight timelines .
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations with discretion and professionalism.
  • Demonstrates a deep understanding of the urban school system with a large racially and economically diverse population .
  • Ability to communicate effectively and clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Act ethically and according to professional norms to promote each student’s academic success and well-being.
  • Demonstrates effective relationships with principals and other district staff.
  • Act as an agent of continuous improvement to promote each student’s academic success and well-being.
  • Model and possess effective listening and interpersonal skills necessary to coach, build capacity, and supervise.

Responsibilities

  • In conjunction with the Superintendent, providing appropriate data to the Board so that it may effectively evaluate progress on District goals/strategies .
  • In conjunction with the Superintendent, providing information to the Board so they may assess compliance with written policy and procedure, and applicable laws and regulations for current and proposed district initiatives .
  • Oversight of ongoing auditing operational processes and auditing of all accounts of the District as required under statute by the secretary.
  • Performing all duties imposed by statute and regulation on the Secretary of the Board , and as imposed by the policies and practices of the Board . Duties as set forth in policies and regulations may be delegated and done in conjunction with Administration .
  • Attending all meetings of the Board , unless excused; and keeping an accurate journal of the proceedings of Board and Committee meetings .
  • Maintaining all records, reports, petitions, and other documents presented to and referred to in the minutes of the Board, including budget input sessions, podcasts and other records of meetings .
  • Assuring the proper notifications to the public of meetings, and the necessary posting of materials for Board meetings and Committee meetings on websites or as is determined appropriate by the Board, for use by the Board and by the public .
  • Taking charge of the books and records of the Board; maintaining the internal budget of the Board .
  • Maintaining all contracts, records and documents belonging to the Board , and maintaining a duplicate copy of all contracts of employment with certificated employees of the district, including but not limited to the contract and evaluations of the Superintendent .
  • Supporting the business affairs and day-to-day operation of the Board , serving as a liaison between the Board and the Superintendent, the staff, the public, the community, and media via district communications and public relations .
  • Ensuring appropriate policy changes required by legislative and regulatory changes are brought to the Board for consideration in a timely manner, working with Administration and legal counsel to develop sam as required by statute or desired by the Board .
  • Assisting the Board , Superintendent and Board Committees in the creation of policies, agendas, minutes, announcements, working with Administration to develop same as required by statute or desired by the Board .
  • Overseeing provision of support to Board for Board travel, conferences and schedules .
  • Supporting the establishment, updating and reporting to the Board on the Board’s c alendar .
  • Facilitating with the Superintendent and the Board, planning and workshops, Board self-evaluation and Superintendent evaluation .
  • Facilitating with the Superintendent the provision of a comprehensive orientation and training for each newly elected or appointed Board Member .
  • Performing all other duties as assigned by the Superintendent, Board and Board Policy .
