About The Position

The Social Studies Teacher will provide intense academic knowledge and skills in social science, including social studies, history, American government, political science, or humanities, to secondary students utilizing course of study adopted by SEED, and other appropriate learning activities; Develops student skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, that are fundamental to effective communication and literate citizenship. This position reports to the Assistant Principal.

Requirements

  • The MS/US Social Studies will meet all qualifications and behavior standards as set by the State of Maryland authority. In accordance with certification requirements and performance expectations, all classroom teachers shall meet the following employment criteria.
  • The minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A valid Maryland Teacher’s Certificate in Social Studies (6-12) or the ability to possess a conditional certification
  • Ability to pass a background check

Responsibilities

  • Teaches courses in social studies, history, geography, American government, political science or humanities to middle school students utilizing the course of study adopted by SEED and other appropriate curriculum publications as guidelines in teaching individual course content.
  • Develop lesson plans to teach a balanced social studies program involving factual background material, material on current events, discussion time, and other appropriate activities designed to encourage students to develop skills and attitudes, draw conclusions, and achieve improved interpersonal relationships.
  • Provide opportunities, when needed, for individualized and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  • Develops knowledge of the purpose, structure, and operation of the American governmental and economic system and the rights and responsibilities of American citizenship.
  • Evaluate each student’s progress in social studies knowledge and skills.
  • Selects and requisitions books, instructional aids, and supplies; maintains required inventory records.
  • Supervise daily and check homework, ensure students’ academic progress, and serve as a primary point of contact for parents.
  • Regularly assess student mastery of key skills and concepts and use this data to differentiate instruction to meet student needs.
  • Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities.
  • Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator(s) to develop the method by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.
