Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; college degree in biology, education, ecology, etc. a plus.
  • Experience with presentations, public speaking, programming or other experience required.
  • Experience working with live animals in an animal care or educational setting.
  • Basic natural history knowledge of Ohio’s flora and fauna.
  • Public service experience.
  • Enthusiastic attitude, ability to teach in a manner that makes learning fun.
  • Positive, professional attitude. Ability to make responsible decisions.
  • Adapt easily to changing circumstances in a busy workplace.
  • Communicate well both verbally and in writing required.
  • Plan and organize in an efficient and cost-effective manner without direct supervision required.
  • Ability to operate a two-way radio.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in unexpected wildlife or guest situations.
  • Comfort working outdoors in varying weather conditions for extended periods.
  • Provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests and upholding the Guest Service standards required.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with all Wilds/Zoo team members.
  • Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and strong teamwork, especially important in seasonal staffing structures.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays required.
  • Possession of a valid state-issued driver’s license and a good driving record is a must.
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening and criminal background check.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements of the role, including extended periods of driving, walking on uneven terrain, and lifting as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in outdoor, fast‑paced, or seasonal environments preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred or willingness to train.

Responsibilities

  • Guest Engagement & Education
  • Develop an understanding of provided information and present engaging interpretation of Wilds conservation work while transporting visitors through visitor and animal pastures.
  • Present programs, presentations and other educational activities for the public, visiting groups and summer camp participants; may include day programs and overnight stays.
  • Utilize artifacts and other tools for conveying messages to visitors.
  • Act as a representative of the Wilds including appropriate dress, language and attitude.
  • Greet and inform guests of pertinent information including bus schedules.
  • Provide a welcoming, inclusive experience for diverse guest groups and learning styles.
  • Demonstrate strong situational awareness while facilitating guest interactions in dynamic outdoor environments.
  • Animal & Visitor Safety
  • Make decisions regarding the safety of guests and animals while interacting with animals.
  • Insure the security of animals and visitors related to animal program facilities.
  • Adhere to standard operating procedures including safety protocols required.
  • Report any safety concerns, unusual animal behavior, or facility issues promptly and accurately.
  • Vehicle Operation & Tour Logistics
  • Operate a four-wheel drive vehicle in off-road conditions.
  • Provide daily vehicle inspection and keep vehicles clean.
  • Perform sunset, facility or other special tours.
  • Follow all driving, parking, and movement procedures specific to pasture and off‑road environments.
  • Operations & Facility Support
  • Assist in daily housekeeping/light groundskeeping tasks; heavy lifting required.
  • Strive to further the mission of the organization and support the Wilds, Zoo, Zoombezi Bay and Safari Golf Club.
  • Support seasonal operational needs, including weather‑related adjustments and high‑volume guest days.
