About The Position

Under general supervision, performs equipment chemical spraying to control and eradicate designated noxious weeds from public and private land. The position uses a variety of chemical spray equipment to control identified noxious weeds in Morton County; much of the work includes mechanical repair and fabrication of equipment as well as fieldwork in the identification and eradication of noxious weeds. The work s chedule is usually Monday through Friday (depending on weather conditions). This is a temporary, seasonal position that typically works between the months of May to mid-September. R equires extensive outside manual labor in a variety of weather conditions.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency is required
  • Must possess valid North Dakota Driver’s License
  • Knowledge of restricted use and application of chemical pesticides, and safety and clean up procedures
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • Knowledge of noxious weeds and detrimental impacts on the environment
  • Knowledge of rules, regulations, and laws pertaining to Morton County Weed Program and herbicide application
  • Knowledge of procedures necessary to repair and maintain equipment
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, GPS, and GIS software
  • Knowledge of how to measure and mix pesticides and work with registered herbicides
  • Knowledge of techniques and methods of weed identification
  • General knowledge of safety precautions for working on roadways
  • General knowledge of safety precautions for working with chemicals and registered herbicides
  • Skilled in the safe and effective application of various toxic chemical sprays
  • Skilled in safe and efficient operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures
  • Ability to identify rangeland vegetation, including noxious weed species during different stages of growth
  • Ability to operate a truck, trailer, ATV, UTV, and spray equipment skillfully and safely
  • Ability to work alone and unsupervised
  • Ability to travel on public conveyances
  • Ability to appear for scheduled work with regular, reliable, and punctual attendance
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative, effective, and productive working relationships using tact, patience, and courtesy
  • Ability to effectively plan and organize work and complete tasks within prescribed timeframes
  • Ability to understand and follow both written and oral instructions
  • Ability to comply with safety protocol. Operate weed eradication equipment
  • Ability to work in adverse and physically taxing field conditions
  • Ability to read maps with working knowledge of the County’s geography and apply directions from maps or GPS systems and travel throughout Morton County

Nice To Haves

  • one (1) year related work experience in weed control or similar work providing knowledge of pesticides/herbicides for weed control is preferred; OR equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the position may be considered
  • upon hire must obtain and maintain a Commercial Applicator’s License in the following categories: CORE, agricultural Pest control, and Right of Way

Responsibilities

  • Applies chemicals to control and eradicate noxious weeds; performs bio-control tasks as required
  • Operates hand and power tools, and motorized equipment for the application of weed control sprays; maintains and repairs tools and equipment as needed
  • Using established procedures and equipment including but limited to 4x4 trucks, ATV/UTV’s, GPS, pumps, small engines, and Personal Protective Equipment
  • Ensure spraying procedures adhere to weed control rules and regulations by maintaining communication with the supervisor and other crew hands via training and established written materials
  • Perform regular maintenance on equipment, including checking and/or changing oil, tire pressure. Clean equipment including washing vehicles. Clean and organize shop
  • Keep accurate and detailed records for each spraying day
  • Uses safety equipment and clothing when around chemicals
  • Assists the Weed Officer in keeping a clean/safe facility
  • Doing the prep work on equipment for each day’s use
  • Meet with landowners to sell chemicals when the weed officer isn’t available
  • Assist in bug collections for biocontrol of noxious weeds
  • Obtain and maintain Commercial Applicator’s License
  • Survey and map County properties, public and private, for infestation of noxious weeds
  • Operate spraying unit on public and private lands (i.e., roadsides, canal banks, private fields)
  • Identify noxious weeds and various applicable species
  • Clean and calibrate spraying equipment
  • Provide input to supervisor on improvements in equipment and techniques
  • Interact with park visitors and private property owners
  • Completes required daily logs, records, and maps; maintains supplies inventory
  • Perform other duties as appropriate or necessary for the performance of the job
