Key Position Details: Casual (0.0 FTE) Anticipated 20 hours per week during the summer season day/evening/night shifts Occasional weekends Depending on the program, this may include possible travel to events/clinics locally Spring/Summer – Adaptive Cycling/Waterskiing: This position will organize weekly bike rides on various trails throughout the Twin Cities. Participants and volunteers ride primarily on asphalt-paved designated bike trails throughout the Twin Cities and suburbs. Ride at your own pace with a volunteer instructor. Some riders may bike up to 20-25 miles per ride by the end of the season. Adaptive waterskiing at lakes around the Twin Cities Metro area. Waterskiing is a perfect sport for adaptive equipment that offers individuals with mobility, visual or other impairments the joys and benefits of watersports. Adaptive devices, including sit skis, accommodate various levels of ability. Fall/Winter – Adaptive Ski/Snowboard: Courage Kenny Ski & Snowboard offers one-to-one instruction in adaptive skiing and snowboarding techniques that accommodate people with a variety of disabilities. Downhill skiing and snowboarding lessons are available for beginner to advanced skiers and snowboarders. This position works closely with volunteer instructors who specialize in teaching skiing and snowboarding with the use of adaptive equipment to ski or ride.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age with education and/or experience needed to meet required functional competencies as listed on the job description
  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • 2 to 5 years in working alongside persons with disabilities
  • Valid Driver’s License required upon hire - MN and WI residents must obtain a valid driver’s license in their state of residence within 60 days of employment

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in adaptive physical education, therapeutic recreation, special education, sports management or related field

Responsibilities

  • Oversight of program operations.
  • Provide direction and assist with training volunteers within industry standards in risk management procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and organized files, including attendance.
  • Work with the Program Coordinator to execute onsite logistics.
  • Must be willing to travel to program site including competitions and tournaments as scheduled.
  • Supervise and communicate with volunteers consistently.
  • Ensure safety, fun and learning is a top priority.
  • Provide feedback, input and support for other program initiatives.
  • Carries out and reports site specific crises/emergency plan at program.
  • Program coordination and event planning.
  • Assist Program Coordinator with the development of program curriculum, risk management plan, implement, and evaluate, all programs to ensure best practices delivery of all sport and recreation programs.
  • Consistently use the program planner to ensure all aspects of the program are documented.
  • Provide ongoing support to special events as assigned.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate all special events consistent with department needs.
  • Integrate planning process with appropriate team members.
  • Community building & partnerships.
  • Serve as a resource to participants, their families, volunteers, community partners and internally by providing information and advocacy for sports and recreation programs and services.
  • Maintain communication and relationship development with site specific professionals, media and community at large to promote services.
  • Present at conferences, colleges, community events as necessary.
  • Attend fundraising special events.
  • Participate in program publicity opportunities through media interviews.
  • Identify and communicate potential leads or developments which have potential to lead to further support of the program.
  • Maintain program equipment.
  • Assist in identifying the potential in current and new volunteers.
  • Prepare volunteers to be safe, effective and knowledgeable instructors and coaches to meet the needs of the program.
  • Assist with training volunteers, interns and communicate pertinent information.
  • Rounding program outcomes that involve volunteers back to Program Coordinator and ensuring the relationship is strengthened.
  • Other duties as assigned.
