About The Position

The Science Communicator supports the Fleet Mission Statement and Visitor Experience Philosophy by providing educational programming designed for school groups and public audiences both at the Fleet and out in the community. This position will facilitate workshops, camps, shows, youth and adult programs, outreach programs, and exhibit experiences, and will assist with developing the curriculum for these programs. The Science Communicator will also conduct informal educational demonstrations and activities on the gallery floor, assist in the management of our exhibit facilitation program, and ensure the safe operation of our ball pool and other interactive experiences on our gallery floor. This is a part time, seasonal role anticipated to go through August of 2026 with possibility of extension depending on programmatic needs. Weekly hours will vary, but Sunday/Monday availability is required. Position Dates: ASAP- August 2026

Requirements

  • Strong interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects preferred.
  • Valid CA driver’s license and willingness to drive company vehicles to offsite locations.
  • Strong verbal communication skills with an emphasis on classroom management, public speaking, and presenting information to diverse audiences in an understanding and compelling fashion.
  • Customer service experience and an ability to provide high-level visitor experiences.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a diverse team environment.
  • Ability to organize time effectively and manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Some college education is a plus, especially bachelor’s degree in education or science.
  • Bilingual desired.
  • Experience teaching and leading school-aged children in hands-on activities, youth supervisory experience, public performance, and acting experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct engaging educational experiences:
  • Of various types, including hands-on workshops, camp classes, shows, teacher professional development workshops, as well as other educational programs, gallery experiences, and exhibit interpretations at the Fleet, in area schools, and out in the San Diego County community;
  • And designed for diverse audiences, including field trip groups, children, teachers, adults, and the general public.
  • Assist in the creation, planning, and implementation of new programs and exhibits, including curriculum writing as needed.
  • Conduct weekly confirmation calls to clients (school groups, etc.) to confirm offsite programs.
  • Implement safety protocols to ensure that Fleet visitors interact with gallery experiences in a safe and orderly manner.
  • Maintain functionality and organization of learning labs and educational workspaces, including specific gallery spaces and exhibit pieces.
  • Take reasonable care of educational tools and Fleet vehicles, including restocking and organizing offsite kits.
  • Share information about Fleet programs with schools and the general public, and collect data as directed.
  • Provide exemplary customer service, and handle questions, comments and/or complaints from education program participants and Fleet gallery visitors professionally and tactfully.
  • Assist in the installation and de-installation of exhibitions as needed.
  • Work flexible schedule to include weekends, holidays, and occasional evening shifts.
  • Attend employee and educator training programs and meetings as directed.
