The Seasonal Mental, Emotional, and Social Health (MESH) Specialist oversees the mental, emotional, and social health of campers and staff. This role involves partnering with campers, families, and counselors to provide necessary resources, training, and skills for campers' success while at camp. The specialist is responsible for upholding all policies, procedures, and safety standards to ensure the wellbeing of all campers and is expected to be an active participant in the campers’ experience and the overall camp community. This is a seasonal full-time position at Camp Alice Chester in East Troy, WI, from May 21, 2026, through July 29, 2026.

Requirements

  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field or a student entering their fourth year of a bachelor's degree majoring in education or a human services degree and have previous experience of working with children.
  • Knowledge and experience of working with children and youth with special emotional, behavioral, cognitive, communicative and/or physical challenges.
  • Work flexible schedules, irregular, weekend, and evening hours.
  • Ability to maintain records and create and implement plans for action.
  • Good driving record and valid driver’s license for at least one year.
  • Valid driver’s license, compliance with the council’s policy of automobile insurance limits, and a driving record that meets the requirements for coverage of the council’s business auto insurance carrier.
  • Ability to accept guidance and supervision.
  • Ability to make decisions and act wisely and calmly in emergencies.
  • Comfort and ability to live, sleep, and work in a rustic outdoor environment with irregular hours.
  • Physical demands and work environments regularly require the employee to walk, hike, and work outdoors in wooded areas and as well as inclement weather and extreme temperatures.
  • Ability to lift 40lbs.

  • Effectively and respectfully communicate instructions, issues, and needs with campers, staff, and supervisors including with people across cultures, ranges of ability, genders, ethnicities, and races.
  • Willingness to subscribe to the philosophy of the Girl Scout program and enroll as a Girl Scout member.
  • Willingness to be an active, respectful member of camp and all camp activities while upholding Girl Scout traditions.
  • Must have a background check completed by GSWISE.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with young adults as a plus.
  • Experience and/or training in specific program specialty.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.

Responsibilities

  • Review in advance camper health histories for assessing and anticipating specific individual needs.
  • Identify individual needs of campers and discuss behavioral plans with camp counselors, health staff and parents prior to the campers’ arrival.
  • Observe and interact with campers and staff to promote a positive experience at camp.
  • Work one-on-one with campers who are experiencing difficulty participating in the program.
  • Maintain consistent check-ins with staff and campers needing support as well as general check-ins with units to be proactive in resolving potential issues.
  • Intervene if campers are experiencing significant behavioral challenges.
  • Help campers and staff resolve conflicts appropriately.
  • Provide support and guidance to staff as they deal with camper behavior problems.
  • Be available to debrief campers / staff in situations where emergency actions are needed or advised.
  • Be available to intervene in situations that may arise during the camp and provide necessary assistance to the camper prior to allowing the camper to return to activities.
  • Consult and guide staff to monitor the overall emotional and social well-being of the camp community.
  • Provide support to staff as they deal with personal challenges.
  • Aid alongside admin staff in mediating staff conflicts and monitoring staff morale.
  • Work as a liaison with parents referencing camp behavior policy in communicating problem behaviors.
  • Keep Camp Program Directors informed of all situations and issues as they arise.
  • Responsible for keeping track of and logging financials.
  • Assist in the opening and closing of the camp.
  • Assist in providing training to staff during orientation, pre-camp training and any ongoing enrichments.
  • Comprehend, monitor and be willing to initiate crisis management plans and overall safety guidelines, including emergency procedures.
  • Provide resources to staff and campers to assist with MESH needs.
  • Monitor safety procedures as they pertain to the complete supervision of all campers and staff.
  • Document all services rendered for both campers and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
