About The Position

Lincoln Park Zoo inspires communities to create environments where wildlife will thrive in our urbanizing world. The zoo is a leader in local and global conservation, animal care and welfare, learning, and science. A historic Chicago landmark founded in 1868, the not-for-profit Lincoln Park Zoo, is a privately-managed, member-supported organization and is free and open 365 days a year. Works under general supervision in the Bird department. This is an entry-level seasonal position that assists the outdoor bird team. Seasonal bird keeper will work every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, from 7am-1pm. This position runs from May through October 31, 2026, and candidate must be available during this time frame.

Requirements

  • General knowledge of animal behavior, preferably avian behavior
  • Good observation skills with the ability to recognize animal illness/injury
  • Ability to work in a team environment, but also independently at times
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment regarding work activities
  • Ability to exhibit patience when caring for animals
  • Ability to clearly communicate.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy when interacting with guests, coworkers, and volunteers
  • Ability to read and understand written and oral instructions
  • Ability to interact courteously and respectfully with supervisors, fellow employees, volunteers, zoo visitors and general public
  • High School degree (or equivalent)
  • Ability to move or carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to remain on feet for long periods
  • Ability to bend, move, position and ascend
  • Ability to climb ladders
  • No allergy to plants or animals that may interfere with the ability to work.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions and both indoor and outdoor environments
  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record is preferable.
  • Proof of negative TB test.

Nice To Haves

  • Public speaking/demonstration preferred.
  • Demonstrated aviculture experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides daily care and routine husbandry birds within the bird department to include: diet preparation and feeding, weeding/exhibit maintenance, behavioral enrichment, record keeping and limited operant conditioning. Assists with insect care, including the handling of live insects and the daily cleaning of insect housing.
  • Provides medical treatment as prescribed by veterinarian
  • Carries out duties and job assignments delegated by zoological manager
  • Public speaking during African Penguin encounter program
  • Interacts with and supervises guests entering African penguin exhibit
  • Works closely with animal keepers to ensure safety of animals and guests
  • Ensures work space, tools, and equipment are clean, organized and functioning properly
  • Performs various tasks and other duties as assigned
  • May assist with animal procedures including animal handling and animal transporting
  • AVAILABLE TO WORK SPECIAL EVENTS THAT MAY OCCUR OUTSIDE OF REGULAR WORK SCHEDULE AS ASSIGNED.
