About The Position

The Seasonal Environmental Program Educator is an essential part of a team that is tasked with implementing a wide variety of weekly nature activities to park visitors of all ages. Programs include: children's gardening, bird watching, fishing and marine education, and nature walks for families and adults taking place throughout our parks. Hours will fluctuate up to 23 hours per week depending on scheduled programs and events. This is a seasonal position, starting April 15 and ending October 31.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in teaching and/or working with children in summer camps, afterschool programs or other organized group settings is highly preferred.
  • The ideal candidate shows an interest in estuary/marine ecology, wildlife watching/monitoring, gardening or farming and is comfortable around, or willing to become familiar with, fishing tackle and garden tools.
  • Must be comfortable working in unpredictable weather or environmental conditions and traveling to different locations within Battery Park City.
  • Seeking high energy, fun-loving people with a demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for engaging and leading both large and small groups of different ages, abilities, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Willing to work in all outdoor weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry 35+ lbs. preferred.
  • Valid driver's license is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assume a supporting role in implementing curriculum of nature and science programs.
  • Actively engage with preschool/school aged children and caregivers in outdoor settings with high energy and enthusiasm; lead weekly programs with support of Nature & Sciences manager
  • Work with program specialists and full-time program leaders to be proactive, supportive, and prepared in for the needs of a specific program; this may involve moving, lifting, loading and unloading vehicles.
  • Work in accordance with all BPCA policies and procedures regarding uniforms, punctuality, time management and overall communication with upper management, assist in other program requirements as needed.
  • Submit daily reports upon program completion.
  • Maintain Parks Programming equipment and facilities (both indoor and outdoor).
  • Provide information to park visitors about all Parks Programming offerings, horticulture, and maintenance practices, as well as general BPCA history and overall philosophy.
