About The Position

Carbondale Fire District is accepting applications for Seasonal Employees to support summer wildland initial attack patrols, all-hazard response operations, special event staffing, Federal and State wildland fire assignments, and mitigation efforts. Primary duties focus on wildland initial attack patrols, with responsibilities assigned based on the employee’s level of certification, training, and experience. Under the direction of assigned supervisory personnel, the Seasonal Employee performs a variety of operational, support, and maintenance functions in support of Carbondale Fire’s wildland and all-hazards mission. This position primarily supports wildland initial attack patrols, all-hazard response operations, special event staffing, and wildfire mitigation activities. This position may assist with emergency response, prevention, and public education efforts based on the employee’s level of certification and experience. Duties are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, and safety standards, with an emphasis on operational readiness, risk reduction, and effective service delivery.

Requirements

  • 18 years of age
  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • NWCG S130/190 and L-280 Basic Wildland Firefighter Certified by May 22, 2026
  • Successful completion of the NWCG Arduous Pack Test by May 22, 2026
  • ICS 100 and NIMS 700/800 certifications by May 22, 2026
  • American Heart Association – BLS CPR for Healthcare Providers by May 22, 2026
  • Applicants must be able to perform all essential job functions as outlined in the job description
  • Must currently reside within a 75-mile radius of Carbondale Colorado

Responsibilities

  • Performs functional and administrative duties in providing wildland firefighting, rescue, firefighting, EMS response, and other emergency responses.
  • Respond to wildland fires as part of a crew, assisting with fire suppression, containment, and mop-up operations.
  • Conduct wildland initial attack patrols during the summer months.
  • Conduct wildfire risk assessments and compile detailed reports of the findings.
  • Maintain and repair firefighting equipment and vehicles to ensure readiness.
  • Support Carbondale Fire’s Prevention Division with public education, including station tours and distributing fire safety materials.
  • Perform fuel reduction tasks, including but not limited to thinning vegetation, clearing brush, creating firebreaks, and chipping branches.
  • Works under the direct supervision of the Shift Lieutenant or other superior officer as may be designated.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support Carbondale Fire’s organizational objectives.
  • Assist with providing pre-hospital emergency medical care, including patient assessment, basic life support (BLS), and transport. Duties include administering CPR, controlling bleeding, splinting fractures, managing airways, and assisting with medical emergencies.
  • Respond to fires, rescues, and other emergencies to protect life and property. Duties include fire suppression, search and rescue, ventilation, hazard mitigation, and providing medical aid.
