About The Position

The Seasonal Education Assistant position with the City of Hutchinson Zoo is a seasonal role for Spring/Summer, focusing on facilitating revenue-based zoo education programs for campers aged 4-14. The role involves handling program animals and providing occasional animal husbandry assistance. Staff are also responsible for maintaining a safe, healthy, clean, and attractive Zoo environment and offering courteous assistance to participants and guests. The ideal candidate will be creative, enjoy working with animals and children, and possess excellent education/interpretive, guest relations, organizational, and communication skills.

Requirements

  • 1 year experience as an educator, program facilitator, camp counselor or similar related work experience
  • A valid Driver's License
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Possess excellent education/interpretive skills
  • Possess excellent guest relations skills
  • Possess excellent organizational skills
  • Possess excellent communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • A high school diploma or GED
  • Some college credit or a degree in education, biology, environmental science, or a related field
  • Creative and enjoys working with both animals and zoo campers age 4-14

Responsibilities

  • Perform the full range of activities required to facilitate revenue-based zoo education programs
  • Perform program animal handling
  • Provide occasional animal husbandry assistance
  • Maintain a safe, healthy, clean, and attractive Zoo environment
  • Provide courteous assistance to participants and guests
  • Develop, design, and implement creative, interactive, and age-appropriate educational activities for zoo campers between the age of 4-14
  • Prepare program-specific learning-related materials
  • Ensure a fun, educational and safe environment for children
  • Conduct engaging and age-appropriate zoo tours, animal encounters, art & craft projects, and other activities
  • Safely handle and present wild/exotic animals
  • Set up and store program supplies
  • Assign duties to and coordinate teen volunteers
  • Facilitate early camper check-in and afternoon check-out, including with camper´s parents when appropriate
  • Follow guidelines as outlined for medical situations, behavior problems and other camper situations
  • Respond to guest questions and educate guests about the care and handling of animals
