About The Position

The Appalachian Mountain Club (www.outdoors.org) is the oldest conservation and recreation organization in the United States at almost 150 years old. The AMC mission is to foster the protection, enjoyment and understanding of the outdoors, with a focus on the mountains, forests, rivers, and trails from Maine to Virginia. The AMC encourages the involvement of all people in its mission and activities, through its membership, programs, lodges, huts, and volunteer camps & cabins as well as its policies, and procedures. Cold River Camp (CRC) is a volunteer camp and cabin that has been operating for just over 105 years and is on the Maine/ New Hampshire border tucked away in peaceful Evans Notch. Cold River Camp is a full-service AMC facility offering individual cabin accommodation. White Mountain National Forrest (WMNF) rivers, ponds, back roads, and hiking trails surround Cold River Camp where guests launch daily adventures and outdoor exploration. Family-style meals are served in the lodge dining room for breakfast and dinner and a trail lunch is put out fresh each morning for guests to assemble their own lunches to their preference. Guests, who consist of individuals, couples, small friend groups, large and small families, stay for week-long sessions from late June through Labor Day. Summary Description The 9-person Camp Croo is the life blood of CRC and makes the guests stay possible, enjoyable, and memorable. They help clean and maintain buildings and grounds, serve breakfast and dinner meals for the 9-week guest session, and arrive a week early to train and learn everything about CRC! The position runs from mid-June to late August. The schedule comprises split morning and evening shifts between 6:00am to 8:00pm with weekdays off. Croo is scheduled for approximately 45 hours per week, with additional hours required at times. All staff are required to work Saturdays throughout the summer season.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Exceptional customer service skills. Friendly, outgoing, and ability to engage with guests routinely
  • Ability to be a team player within a detail-oriented, fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds in an inclusive environment.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule including weekends, holidays, mornings, and evenings required for a full 10 weeks
  • Physical ability to carry up to 40 pounds and walk, stand, sit, lift 25 pounds from floor to waist high and to perform all work responsibilities without assistance

Nice To Haves

  • First Aid certification, preferred but not necessary
  • Prior food service or kitchen experience (not required but helpful)
  • Outdoor experience and knowledge of the White Mountain area (not required but helpful)

Responsibilities

  • Housekeeping and daily upkeep of all cabins, bathrooms, communal spaces, and other buildings.
  • Buildings and groundwork, including mowing, firewood stacking, trash removal, recycling, linen services, and assisting with small repairs
  • Set up, serve, clean up breakfast and dinner meal services and trail lunch table
  • Set up, maintain, and breakdown cold and hot beverage stations throughout day
  • Clean and sanitize all food service and dining areas daily including the kitchen following local, state, and federal guidelines
  • Follow all instructions and support kitchen staff in preparing the daily meals
  • Assist kitchen staff in preparing food when needed to include salad making, baking, and ingredient preparation for breakfast, dinner, and lunch table items
  • Interact with guests positively and inclusively.
  • Contribute to the overall success of all camp operations as needed or assigned.
  • Adhere to all AMC, state and federal Covid-19 protocols for food service and facility sanitation.
  • Greet and assist campers when they arrive and throughout their stay
  • Interact with all guests positively and inclusively
  • Answer any questions and provide information about daily camp life, CRC, and/or AMC
  • Follow instructions and support kitchen staff in preparing the daily meals.
  • Other duties as assigned by management which will contribute to the overall success of camp operations
