Requirements

  • Doctorate degree - Philosophy (PhD) required
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience required

  • Ph.D. in Genetics, Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, or related field.
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in neuroscience research, experimental model development, grant and manuscript writing, and collaborative scientific projects.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees research employees, students, and other relevant staff.
  • Authors scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent applications.
  • Assists in the development of training materials for research staff.
  • Plans experiments and records and analyzes findings.
  • Prepares research proposals and funding applications.
  • Ensures that all activities are in compliance with applicable quality and regulatory standards.
  • Maintains current knowledge of relevant scientific and technical developments.
  • Presents ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
  • Advanced Neuroscience Research & Experimental Model Development Design, conduct, and analyze complex experiments investigating molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration, including ALS, FTD, Alzheimer’s disease, and spinocerebellar ataxias.
  • Develop and maintain animal and cellular models (mouse, Drosophila) for disease mechanism studies and genetic screens.
  • Secure and manage project funding from federal and foundation sources, including NIH, ALS Association, Muscular Dystrophy Association, and others.
  • Grant and Manuscript Writing Draft, edit, format, and submit scientific research grants and progress reports for federal and foundation sponsors.
  • Prepare and submit manuscripts to top-tier journals, address peer-review feedback, and craft point-by-point responses to reviewers.
  • Author scientific reviews, commentaries, book chapters, abstracts, and press releases.
  • Mentorship, Teaching & Collaboration Mentor undergraduate and rotation students, postdoctoral fellows, and research staff in experimental techniques, data analysis, and scientific writing.
  • Lead weekly class discussions, present lectures, and serve as in-lab mentor for special projects.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams and external partners on multi-institutional research projects.
  • Scientific Communication & Presentation Present ongoing work and findings at academic conferences, departmental retreats, and program seminars.
  • Prepare and deliver oral presentations and posters at national and international scientific meetings.
  • Serve as conference assistant and contribute to the organization of scientific workshops and symposia.
  • Technical Skills & Laboratory Management Apply advanced techniques in molecular biology, cell culture, histology, microscopy, protein and nucleic acid extraction, and genetic screening.
  • Manage laboratory operations, including ordering supplies, maintaining equipment, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
