About The Position

The ideal candidate will demonstrate cultural competency in serving diverse community college populations, including faculty, management, and students from varied ethnic, racial, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. This includes those with differing abilities, AB 540 students, DACA recipients, Foreign Residents, VACA participants, and Continuing Education students. Class Summary Under direction from academic and administrative staff, performs skilled technical duties in the operation and maintenance of science laboratories; performs related duties as required. The Biology Department at Santa Ana College is seeking a new laboratory technician on our technical support team, with concentration on physiology and microbiology. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in biological science, life science, or pharmacological science, plus adequate experience in standard techniques used in biological laboratories. Preferred candidates should be familiar with principles and practices of good health and safety management, hazardous materials storage and handling, and hazardous/ biohazardous waste management and disposal. This position requires excellent aseptic techniques, ability to work with preserved animal specimens, adaptability, and problem-solving skills. We are looking for a detail-oriented laboratory professional who works collaboratively, to join our team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in biological or a physical science or equivalent
  • Two years of experience in a biological or a physical science laboratory
  • Knowledge of subject matter and techniques related to assigned laboratories
  • Knowledge of principles, practices and methods of laboratory operations
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of hazardous materials management, health and safety, and hazardous waste disposal
  • Operational computer skills
  • Knowledge of functional characteristics of modern laboratory apparatus, equipment and materials pertaining to assigned laboratories
  • Knowledge of advanced mathematical principles and scientific concepts
  • Knowledge of care and maintenance of live animals, plants, and other organisms
  • Ability to demonstrate correct laboratory methods, practices and techniques
  • Ability to correctly and efficiently set up lab equipment and prepare materials used in exercises and experiments
  • Ability to stay apprised of current regulations relating to health and safety, hazardous materials, and hazardous waste disposal
  • Ability to interpret regulations, rules, material safety data sheets, and other standards relating to laboratory procedures and practices
  • Ability to generate computerized inventory report and files
  • Ability to understand the mechanical function of and perform routine maintenance and repairs on laboratory equipment in assigned laboratories
  • Ability to handle, care for, and display living organisms
  • Ability to interpret and apply administrative policies, procedures, rules and regulations
  • Ability to select, train, assign work to, and evaluate assigned staff (student assistants and instructional aides)
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work
