Program Summary Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN) Community Schools are a school-based service delivery model that provides a comprehensive set of services to the school communities we serve. Position Summary IRCO’s SUN Community Schools offer a variety of programs that support the student’s education and family stability including increasing food access through school-based Free Food Pantries and Markets. This position on the IRCO SUN Hunger Relief team supports these free food distributions.

Requirements

  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • Job responsibilities for 16 – 17 yr old staff will be limited per labor regulations for this age group
  • Must be able to pass Oregon Department of Education background check
  • Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply
  • Applicants with a passion for food security and hunger relief work for the community are encouraged to apply
  • Flexibility is required. There are often changes with short notice.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Excellent multitasking and time management skills
  • Sensitivity and ability to relate to individuals with broad range of lived experiences

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with N/outer NE/outer SE Portland communities preferred
  • A driver's license and a vehicle is not required but is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Be able to repeatedly lift, move, and arrange food products and other equipment to create a pop-up shopping environment for families
  • Be able to lift, hold and carry up to 40 lbs.
  • Be able to follow directions and the standard operating procedures of an IRCO Hunger Relief food distribution
  • Be welcoming, courteous and friendly to all; treating all clients with dignity and respect.
  • Help create a supportive, open and equal environment for the community being served.
  • Be able to effectively work with individuals of broad range of lived experiences
  • Effectively communicate your work availability to supervisor(s), including planned and unplanned absences
  • Be able to follow food safety protocols
  • Be able to follow public school campus and district safety protocols
  • Provide community aware communication, outreach, and engagement to clients
  • Capable of pushing/pulling carts with up to 100 lbs. of food products on ramps, concrete surfaces, and across uneven surfaces
  • Be able to work outside year-round, with minimal structural protection from weather
  • Be able to acquire a Food Handler’s card when directed to do so
  • Pick up and/or delivery of food may be offered as additional hours for staff to opt in to
  • An ability to develop a community-aware approach and respectful relationships with students, their families and all the community members we serve
  • Actively work to disrupt illegal or unlawful treatment based on race and systematic illegal denial of fair treatment through full participation program practice and implementation
  • Utilize bilingual skills to support a community aware approach in communication with families and clients in their preferred language, when possible
