Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field and three years experience in law or security enforcement, or 10 years experience in law or security enforcement, required.
  • Completed or able to complete the National SRO Basic Training course.
  • Must be licensed under Pa Title 18 Section 6109, and be certified under Act 235, Lethal Weapons Training Act.
  • Certified in First Aid and CPR.
  • Experience working with youth or young adults.
  • Competent in the use of technology.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Such alternatives to the above as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
  • Ability to read, write, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Responsibilities

  • Provide school safety support services.
  • Provide enhanced supervision of school buildings and property.
  • Assist building staff with disruptive students by providing de-escalation, conflict resolution, or a physical escort as determined by the situation.
  • Coordinate with law enforcement officials, including school police officers and supporting agencies.
  • Assist in providing safety and security functions which improve and maintain school safety while also enforce school board policy: Be alert to identify and prevent persons from entering the building or grounds for the purpose of disrupting the educational process and/or committing criminal acts.
  • Secure assistance from faculty and staff in ascertaining if persons entering building have legitimate business there.
  • Attempt to resolve less serious (non-criminal) acts of misconduct by students by referring the offender(s) to the Building Administrator for disciplinary action as appropriate.
  • Work in conjunction with building administration to patrol all halls in assigned school building, checking critical areas such as restrooms, the area outside of doors, open lockers, check for locked doors, etc.
  • Perform periodic surveys of the physical campus to ascertain possible weak areas of security. i.e., fire hazards, broken doors/windows, and other safety repairs or vulnerabilities.
  • Advise Supervisor of School Safety of findings and make recommendations to correct these potential problems.
  • Call for assistance from the Security Manager, Building Administrator, or Millcreek Police Department as the situation warrants.
  • Act as first responder and come to the aide of administrators, faculty members, students, and other safety officers whenever the need arises.
  • Report complaints or observations of criminal behavior to the Security Manager, the Building Administrator, and in the case of an emergency, contact the Millcreek Police Department.
  • Assist Building Administrator with facilitating safety drills and monitoring camera systems.
  • Working knowledge of Title 18 PA crimes code.
  • Survey walkways and bus lots through which students must walk en route to school before, during, and towards the end of the school day to check for unauthorized visitors or hazardous physical conditions, e.g., ice, snow, down wires/trees, leaks, etc., and report their findings to the Security Manager and the Building Administrator for any needed follow up action.
  • Follow appropriate procedures if a crime against student(s), school personnel, and/or property occurs.
  • Assist the administrator, faculty members, students, and other personnel whenever the need arises.
  • Coordinate with the appropriate authority for complaints of assaults, extortions, intimidation, and the bringing of weapons, drugs, and other legal contraband into school buildings.
  • Coordinate with the appropriate authority for any theft or disappearance of school property and personal property belonging to students, administrator, or faculty.
  • Provide law enforcement all assistance possible should a victim of a crime wish to prosecute.
  • Submit an incident report to the Security Manager when necessary.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or their designee.
