About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Lieutenant, the SRO is responsible for providing law enforcement services to the citizens of the Winnebago Tribe in a timely, efficient and professional manner. Often working alone, the SRO must exercise independent judgment and discretion acting decisively during times of crisis and emergency. The SRO provides law enforcement and crime prevention functions, as well as involvement in school related activities and functions in the Winnebago School System, as a member of the Winnebago Police Department. The SRO may be required to work a rotation of various shifts as assigned, to include night, day, evening, holiday, and weekend hours with availability for call out on a twenty-four hours’ basis.

Requirements

  • Must be eligible for certification under the Indian Police Academy at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.
  • A citizen of the United States.
  • Minimum of 21 years of age.
  • A graduate of an accredited high school or has an acceptable high school equivalency certificate.
  • No prior felony, serious misdemeanor or domestic violence related convictions.
  • Is of good moral character.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain, prior to hire, a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • All other minimum qualifications required as a Patrol Officer.

Nice To Haves

  • Current certification from an accredited Law Enforcement Academy.
  • Prior active full-time Active Duty, with an honorable discharge (Veterans Preference).
  • One or more years of prior law enforcement or corrections experience at a department of a similar size.
  • Three or more years of prior experience as a member of the Winnebago Tribal Police Department.
  • Associate’s degree or completion of two (2) years of college coursework from an accredited college, university, or technical school in a criminal justice or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce laws and ordinances.
  • Investigate misdemeanor and felony crimes.
  • Arrest offenders of the law.
  • Respond to assistance requests from school staff regarding incidents included in job description, medical, and other emergencies.
  • Assist in developing law related curriculum.
  • Maintain order and interact with students and staff in a school setting.
  • Perform any and all necessary law enforcement functions, including arrest, courtroom testimony, and crime investigation and prevention.
  • Prepare a law related education curriculum and present lessons to students.
  • Attend conferences with faculty, parents, and students when requested.
  • Assist other law enforcement and court services personnel in connection with this position.
  • Assists with the development and presentation of public educational programs and strives to maintain good public relations.
  • Maintains personal police equipment.
  • Performs a wide variety of law enforcement, crime prevention, and special duties or units as assigned.
  • Operate and maintain department issued firearms.
  • When working in the school resource officer capacity, the officer will be assigned duties consistent with the functions as a Winnebago Tribal Police Department officer and duties contained within the Patrol Officer job description.
