About The Position

The School Nurse provides necessary health services to students to maintain good health within the school system. This role involves conducting school health services, including physical examinations, immunizations, and tests for hearing and vision. The nurse is responsible for selecting and referring students for medical and dental care, reporting on school medical matters to various parties, and maintaining up-to-date cumulative health records. In the absence of a physician, the nurse assumes authority for the care of students or staff with injuries or emergency illnesses. The position also involves participating in the development and implementation of the total school health program, advising on educational program modifications for students with health needs, and preparing reports for the Lead Nurse. The School Nurse recommends exclusion and readmission of students based on Board policy for infectious diseases, advises teachers on health matters, assists in establishing sanitary conditions, and participates in relevant meetings and training programs. Additional duties include performing head checks for lice, scoliosis screening, monitoring students with physical disabilities and medical needs, and stocking first aid kits.

Requirements

  • Comply with all employment criteria legally established by the Lee County Board of Education.
  • Licensed RN.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with principals, teachers and students.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for successful completion of the assigned task.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of sixty pounds.
  • Background Check Required: Upon offer of employment, employees will be required to submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct school health service, including physical examinations, immunizations, and tests for hearing and vision.
  • Assume responsibility for selection and referral of students in need of medical and dental care.
  • Report to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on school medical matters.
  • Maintain up-to-date cumulative health records on all students.
  • Assume authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered injury or emergency illness.
  • Visits student homes when necessary.
  • Participate with school staff in developing and implementing total school health program.
  • Advise on modifications of the educational program to meet health needs of individual students.
  • Prepare and submit reports to the Lead Nurse.
  • Recommend exclusion and readmission of students in compliance with Board policy on infectious and contagious diseases.
  • Advise teachers on health matters, particularly regarding screening for student health defects.
  • Assist school personnel in establishing sanitary conditions in schools.
  • Attend committee meetings and conferences regarding health service and health curriculum.
  • Participate in in-service training program.
  • Perform head checks for lice and scoliosis screening.
  • Be available to monitor students with physical disabilities that may have medical needs.
  • Responsible for stocking first aid kits at schools.
  • Other duties deemed necessary by the Health Services Coordinator.
