The School Nurse is responsible for direct childcare, appraisal, and follow-up of caseload. This role involves preparing health care plans for involved students and supervising the implementation of required health care procedures. Essential duties include screening students for health defects (height, weight, vision, hearing, scoliosis, and kindergarten screenings), administering medication and treatment prescribed by physicians, and overseeing procedures for office staff to administer medications in the nurse's absence. The nurse conducts parent conferences, maintains liaison between physicians, parents, and staff, and makes recommendations to primary care physicians on student health needs. Maintaining up-to-date cumulative health records, including immunization records and exemptions, is crucial. The nurse reports on student health matters to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies. In the absence of a physician, the nurse assumes authority for the care of a student with an injury or emergency illness, administering first aid according to established procedures and district policies. The role also involves implementing board policy on exclusion and re-admission of students related to infectious and contagious diseases, conducting training for students on impairments, health, and hygiene, and assisting school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards. The nurse is available to provide health-related lesson presentations in classrooms and must observe professional ethics and confidentiality. Other duties may be assigned.
