About The Position

Catherine Cook School seeks a vibrant and energetic School Nurse. This position is central to the health and well-being of the students, families, and overall community. The School Nurse must be passionate about advocating for and supporting students, skilled in nurturing relationships, have strong medical skills, prioritize collaboration amongst teams, and be knowledgeable in both physical and emotional care of both students and adults in the school community.

Requirements

  • Current Registered Nurse licensure in the state of Illinois
  • Current First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Program completion
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Prior pediatric nursing experience; nursing experience in a school/camp setting preferred
  • Baccalaureate degree preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct professional nursing services, first aid, illness and emergency care to students and staff/faculty in accordance with professional standards, school policy and procedures, and state and local mandates.
  • Administer medication with appropriate documentation.
  • Provide guidance to families, faculty, and staff in adhering to school, city, and state health policies and practices.
  • Manage plans for students with allergies, asthma, seizures, and diabetes.
  • Facilitate training to staff and faculty on appropriate and safe use of emergency care, for example, use of Epi-pens or AED defibrillators.
  • Create infectious disease protocols and notifications based on state and national recommendations.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators and other school personnel regarding the health and safety needs of the students.
  • Respond to parent/guardian inquiries within 24 hours.
  • Create infectious disease notification letters based on information from the Center for Disease Control and email to parents as warranted.
  • Ensure up-to-date allergy/asthma/diabetic/seizure action plans and inform all appropriate staff members of students’ health conditions.
  • Prepare and share information about students with serious health issues with classroom and enrichment teachers at the beginning of the school year.
  • Complete accident/incident documentation for students and communicate information with relevant parents, guardians, teachers and administrators.
  • Share relevant information about students and families with Division Heads on a regular basis.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all school and health related issues.
  • Be skilled in the use of Microsoft Office, Electronic Medical Record systems, and Google Applications.
  • Maintain the daily environment of the nurse’s office and supplies.
  • Keep track of emergency medications (Epi-pens and inhalers) and over-the-counter medications in the nurse’s office and classrooms.
  • Prepare and submit state immunization and medical examination reports to IWAS (ISBE).
  • Coordinate on-site vision and hearing screening per Illinois school guidelines.
  • Utilize Magnus, our electronic medical record system.
  • Maintain a daily log of student/staff visits.
  • Maintain baseline health records; review for accuracy and completeness.
  • Monitor immunization compliance and follow up with parents.
  • Monitor compliance with state-required medical examinations and follow up with parents.
  • Ensure all student health forms are complete and uploaded prior to the start of the school year.
  • Manage the parents’ interface with Magnus in a reasonable, supportive manner.
  • Plan meetings before school begins with parents/guardians of children with serious medical conditions. Include teachers and Division Heads when appropriate.
  • Prepare and distribute Emergency Contact/Health information in binders to the main office and classroom teachers before the start of the school year.
  • Assist with all field trip preparation: Create and organize field trip medical forms. Stock and maintain field trip medical sacks. Collect and log medications prior to departure, especially for overnight trips, following school protocols.
