About The Position

Accurately and effectively communicates information through sign language interpretation/transliteration between students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (Deaf/HH) and other individuals who use spoken communication in a variety of K-12 educational settings. Uses the mode of communication specified by the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).

Requirements

  • Associate of Arts degree; AND
  • Interpreter Training Program (ITP), OR Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) 3.0 credential, OR National Interpreter Certification.
  • One (1) year of experience interpreting within the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community.
  • Strong knowledge of English grammar and word vocabulary
  • Strong knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) (discourse level), and skill in signing syntactically and to reverse interpret communication of deaf/hard of hearing persons
  • Knowledge of a variety of sign language modalities, methods, and techniques, which may include fingerspelling, Conceptually Accurate Signed English (CASE), American Sign Language (ASL), or other forms of manual communication
  • Knowledge of Deafness and Deaf Culture
  • Strong syntactical signing skills
  • Strong voice interpreting skills
  • Strong interpretation/transliteration skills
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to read, write and speak English
  • Ability to accept assignments at various schools in performance of duties, in accordance with student and/or District needs
  • Ability to analyze data presented orally and/or in written form and to present such data to the student and/or instructor accurately and effectively
  • Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with students, instructors, parents and others
  • Ability to speak clearly and distinctly when voice interpreting
  • Ability to deliver continuous, accurate, receptive, and expressive interpreting
  • Ability to maintain mental concentration to work for extended periods of time
  • Ability to adhere to the Code of Ethics of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and EIPA guidelines for professional conduct

Responsibilities

  • Correctly spells and explains with fingerspelling, and signs all important vocabulary terms presented by instructor. When appropriate, accompanies signing with voiceless speech and transliteration. Fluently and accurately interprets a medium-paced classroom lecture at a language level most suitable for the student who is Deaf/HH.
  • Fluently and accurately voices for the student who is Deaf/HH.
  • Provides tutoring under the direct supervision of a teacher in areas in which the student who is Deaf/HH has trouble comprehending or completing assignments. Uses basic pedagogical techniques such as getting attention, providing guided practice, and reviewing previously learned material.
  • Secures and reviews class materials in advance to enhance learning opportunities. Seeks clarification from main instructor on any concepts, information, or ambiguous terminology.
  • Collaborates regularly with the Teacher for the Deaf/HH regarding the students’ progress and other issues.
  • Collaborates on interpreting and tutoring approaches.
  • Provides interpreting services for extracurricular activities and parent meetings.
  • Manages and/or assists with environmental/circumstantial factors such as lighting, seating arrangements, auditory needs, visual accessibility, and amplification.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by school principal.
