About The Position

Kate Furbish Elementary School is a large, nature-based and nurturing learning community- serving students from PreK through Grade 2 in Brunswick, Maine. We are committed to fostering curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning in every child. Our staff is passionate about early childhood development and dedicated to creating an inclusive and joyful classroom experience. We proudly implement the Maine Department of Education’s For ME program in all of our classrooms, which provide rich, developmentally appropriate learning experiences designed to support whole-child growth. Intentional play is an integral part of our day. Kate Furbish Elementary School is searching for a school guidance counselor to work with our SEL team to support pre-kindergarten to grade two students and staff. This position will begin in late August, 2026 and continue until December 22, 2026.

Requirements

  • Required Maine State Department of Education Certifications: 075 School Counselor Certification
  • Please electronically submit a completed application, current resume, copies of certification and transcripts, three current letters of recommendation, and a cover letter explaining why specifically you are a match for being a school guidance counselor in a large PreK-Grade 2 school by May 17th.

Responsibilities

  • Respond collaboratively and flexibly to changing student and school needs
  • Use a positive and collaborative approach to problem solving in a fast-paced environment
  • Use a developmental and instructional approach to meet student and staff needs
  • Support student and school crisis management planning
  • Use effective school counseling skills to promote the social emotional development of students through individual and group counseling
  • Regularly supervise students in the school environment
  • Work collaboratively with the Social Emotional Learning Team on a regular basis
  • Consult with families, teachers, and building administrators regarding student progress
  • Coordinate, interpret, and articulate efforts between the home and school
  • Assist families to understand the programs of the school, its expectations and responsibilities
  • Participate in the coordination and development of staff and family education programs
  • Refer families and staff to appropriate community agencies for assistance
  • Perform other related tasks and assume other duties as the Principal may assign from time to time
  • Coordinate Section 504 Plans (meetings and documents)
  • Small group and whole group instruction for social emotional learning
