Working in this position, you have the opportunity to safeguard children and pedestrians as they cross busy intersections, controlling traffic in school zones weekday mornings and afternoons. What You Can Expect: New increased starting salary effective 1/1/2022 is $20/hr. Paid one-day training that provides further details for performing the role Expectations For This Role: Individuals to fill part-time School Crossing Guard roles for school arrival and dismissal We are currently seeking to fill substitute part-time positions. Unless requested, Crossing Guards are assigned to an intersection within the community of their local precinct. Under supervision, an employee in this class controls the traffic of an assigned area to insure safe crossing to children and other pedestrians. Work is performed in accordance with state and local traffic rules and regulations. The incumbent is sometimes assigned to crossings near churches, playgrounds, or other areas which have a great deal of pedestrian traffic. Work is reviewed through observation by members of the police force, the general public and school personnel.

  • Ability to deal with the chil­dren and public in a courteous and tactful manner
  • Physical condition commensu­rate with the demands of the position
  • HEIGHT & WEIGHT - Will not interfere with the candidate's ability to perform duties of the position.
  • SPEECH - Must be free of speech pathology that would interfere with the ability to communicate clearly.
  • VISION ACUITY - Corrected to 20/30 both eyes together.
  • COLOR VISION - Recognize color traffic lenses.
  • HEARING - The average hearing level (HL) for the 3 test frequencies of 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz will not exceed 25 dB in either ear, and hearing loss at 2000 - 4000 Hz will not exceed 40 dB in each ear.
  • CARDIOVASCULAR - Candidate must be free of chronic disabling conditions that would interfere with the candidate's performance of required duties. Candidates with uncontrolled high blood pressure will be restricted pending remediation.
  • RESPIRATORY SYSTEM - Candidate must be free of chronically disabling conditions that would interfere with the candidate's ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • NEUROLOGICAL HEALTH - Candidates must be free of neurological disorders that interfere with the candidate's ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Candidates with any type of epilepsy or seizure disorders must provide evidence of one-year seizure free history with or without drug control.
  • MUSCULOSKELETAL HEALTH - Candidates must have no defects, deformities or disorders that will interfere with the candidate's ability to perform the essential functions of the position. The use of prostheses or braces is allowed as long as the candidate can perform the full range of duties of the position and no security risk is posed.
  • GENERAL MEDICAL STATEMENT - Candidates must be free of any medical condition, including alcohol abuse, and/or psychiatric disorder that would jeopardize the safety and health of the public or with the ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Candidates found to be abusing legal drugs or using illegal drugs will be disqualified.
  • Successfully pass Background Investigation conducted by the Suffolk County Police Department Applicant Investigation Section.

Responsibilities

  • Regulates the directional flow of school children, pedestrian and vehicular traffic at an assigned intersection or school crosswalk
  • Reports traffic incidents to police authorities for appropriate action
  • Notes unusual or suspicious occurrences or actions of individuals and alerts police in cases of observed or suspected violations of laws and ordinances
  • Observes variations in traffic flow and general traffic conditions at assigned posts
  • Reports the extent to which crossing points are used by children and other pedestrians
  • May place caution signs at specified locations
  • Does related work as required
