About The Position

The School Counselor promotes student success by implementing a comprehensive counseling program that addresses the needs of students in the areas of personal-social growth, educational planning, and career and vocational development. This role involves establishing and evaluating the counseling program, providing individual and group counseling services, consulting with students, parents, teachers, and community personnel, and coordinating all counseling services. The counselor also interprets test results for student appraisal, assists with educational placement, and adheres to professional ethical standards, laws, policies, and procedures governing the schools, while also participating in professional development.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to compose and write routine reports.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff and the general public.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Familiarity with basic computer operation and software.
  • Ability to learn various computer operations required for management of student information and integration of technology in classroom instruction.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Masters in School Counseling.

Responsibilities

  • Establish the school counseling program and develop activities and resources to implement and evaluate the program.
  • Involve other school staff in making decisions about the school counseling program.
  • Provide individual and group counseling services to meet the developmental, preventive and remedial needs of students.
  • Consult with students, parents, teachers, and other school and community personnel to assist in meeting the needs of students.
  • Coordinate all counseling services for students and assist with the coordination and implementation of student services in the school.
  • Assist teachers with the Guidance Curriculum.
  • Accurately interpret test results and other student data.
  • Assist teachers with the educational placement of students by using appropriate educational assessment strategies.
  • Adhere to ethical standards of the counseling profession, and abide by the laws, policies, and procedures that govern the schools.
  • Participate in professional associations and upgrade professional knowledge and skills when needed.
