About The Position

Auburn-Washburn Unified School District 437 is a district consisting of 128 square miles of suburban and rural areas in southwest Topeka and Shawnee county. Presently, we have 13 total attendance centers — one early childhood center, seven elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, and two alternative learning centers. TITLE: Bus Driver SALARY LEVEL: $15.00-$21.25/hour (wage determined by years of experience) TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 4+ hours/day, 9 months/year (to include all days school is in session) Previous bus driving experience helpful, but not required. Paid training and assistance obtaining Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with S&P Endorsement provided. EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Supervisor of Transportation. REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Transportation JOB GOAL: To provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the district’s curriculum and extracurricular program.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Hold a valid Kansas Commercial Driver’s License (C.D.L. B or A with S & P Endorsements) OR ability to attend training and obtain Kansas Commercial Driver’s License
  • Thorough knowledge of traffic laws, bus regulations, district policies, rules, and transportation regulations.
  • Good driving skills.
  • No serious driving violations.
  • Ability to pass a bus driver physical examination.
  • Ability to pass a Medic First Aid Course.
  • Ability to pass a Defensive Driving Course.
  • Ability to maintain good discipline on bus.
  • Ability to get along well with students, patrons, and staff; exercising courtesy and tact.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as are determined to be appropriate and acceptable.
  • Must be 18 years of age or over.
  • Attend and/or watch required safety meetings.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous bus driving experience helpful, but not required.
  • Experience driving a bus preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Obey all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  • Practice good public relation policies to be a positive representative of the school system.
  • Maintain discipline when students are on the bus.
  • Report undisciplined students to the proper authority.
  • Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.
  • Keep to assigned schedule.
  • Perform a pre-trip inspection prior to starting the route.
  • Notify the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
  • Discharge students only at authorized stops.
  • Exercise responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips.
  • Transport only authorized students.
  • Report all accidents and complete required reports.
  • Enforce regulations against smoking and eating on the bus.
