About The Position

Auburn-Washburn Unified School District 437 is a district consisting of 128 square miles of suburban and rural areas in southwest Topeka and Shawnee county. Presently, we have 13 total attendance centers — one early childhood center, seven elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, and two alternative learning centers. TITLE: Bus Driver SALARY LEVEL: $15.00-$21.25/hour (wage determined by years of experience) TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 4+ hours/day, 9 months/year (to include all days school is in session) Previous bus driving experience helpful, but not required. Paid training and assistance obtaining Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with S&P Endorsement provided. EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Supervisor of Transportation. REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Transportation JOB GOAL: To provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the district’s curriculum and extracurricular program.

Requirements

High school graduate or equivalent.
Hold a valid Kansas Commercial Driver’s License (C.D.L. B or A with S & P Endorsements) OR ability to attend training and obtain Kansas Commercial Driver’s License
Thorough knowledge of traffic laws, bus regulations, district policies, rules, and transportation regulations.
Good driving skills.
No serious driving violations.
Ability to pass a bus driver physical examination.
Ability to pass a Medic First Aid Course.
Ability to pass a Defensive Driving Course.
Ability to maintain good discipline on bus.
Ability to get along well with students, patrons, and staff; exercising courtesy and tact.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as are determined to be appropriate and acceptable.
Must be 18 years of age or over.
Attend and/or watch required safety meetings.

Nice To Haves

Previous bus driving experience helpful, but not required.
Experience driving a bus preferred.

Responsibilities

Obey all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
Practice good public relation policies to be a positive representative of the school system.
Maintain discipline when students are on the bus.
Report undisciplined students to the proper authority.
Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.
Keep to assigned schedule.
Perform a pre-trip inspection prior to starting the route.
Notify the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
Discharge students only at authorized stops.
Exercise responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips.
Transport only authorized students.
Report all accidents and complete required reports.
Enforce regulations against smoking and eating on the bus.
