Job Goal To support the ESC Region 6 mission by delivering professional, high-quality instruction that prepares individuals to obtain or upgrade to a Texas CDL Class B with School Bus (S) and Passenger (P) endorsements. The trainer will provide both classroom and behind-the-wheel (BTW) instruction in compliance with FMCSA Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) standards and Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) regulations. This position promotes safety, professionalism, and workforce readiness through quality training programs serving school districts and adult learners. Qualifications and Experience: High School Diploma or GED (preferred) Current Texas School Bus Driver Certification Texas School Bus Driver Training Instructor Certification (preferred) Minimum of three (3) years of experience in driver training (school bus, commercial, or equivalent vehicle instruction) Valid Texas CDL, Class B or higher, with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements Meets all FMCSA ELDT instructor requirements (theory and behind-the-wheel) Must have and maintain a safe driving record Must successfully pass criminal background, MVR, and drug/alcohol screenings as required by TEA and FMCSA Work location is based on current class assignment and position serves workforce areas within the Brazos Valley Council of Governments (BVCOG) and Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) regions Special Knowledge and Skills Exemplary professionalism and strong public relations skills Ability to conduct classroom instruction independently with minimal supervision Skilled in behind-the-wheel training techniques, including pre-trip inspections, range maneuvers, and on-road driving In-depth knowledge of: FMCSA ELDT standards (49 CFR Part 380), Texas CDL regulations and School Bus Transportation Code, Texas School Bus Driver Training curriculum and certification requirements Strong presentation, communication, and organizational skills Ability to train and manage multiple participants simultaneously while maintaining attention to safety and compliance Competence in using technology for instruction, scheduling, and TPR (Training Provider Registry) documentation Flexibility to work extended hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays as training needs require Major Responsibilities and Duties Conduct FMCSA-approved ELDT theory, range, and road training for CDL Class B candidates Deliver independent, engaging classroom instruction on Texas Commercial Learners Permit requirements, vehicle operation, safety, and student transportation practices Provide hands-on behind-the-wheel instruction, including pre-trip inspection, vehicle control, and on-road driving evaluation Evaluate trainee performance and document progress to ensure readiness for DPS skills testing Maintain accurate training and completion records in compliance with FMCSA TPR requirements Ensure adherence to ESC 6, TxDOT, DPS, and FMCSA standards for safety, compliance, and reporting Collaborate with ESC 6 Safety Education and Training staff and district Transportation Directors to coordinate classes and training needs Assist in the delivery of Bus Driver Certification (20-hour) and Re-Certification (8-hour) courses Support the promotion and outreach of ESC 6 Safety Education and Training programs across the service region Supervisory Responsibilities None Equipment Used General office equipment Working Conditions Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting Motion: Repetitive hand motions, including frequent keyboarding and use of a mouse; occasional reaching Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds) Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress Frequent regional travel and occasional statewide travel
