About The Position

This full-time, permanent position is responsible for the safe transportation of general education and special education students to and from school routes. Key duties include assisting students with boarding and exiting the bus, performing daily safety checks, and potentially handling special routes, inter-system transfers, or field trips. The role involves a 6-hour workday for 183 days per year, over 10 months.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or a General Equivalency Diploma (GED), or an equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above knowledge, skill, and abilities
  • Valid Virginia State Class B Commercial Driver's License with the following endorsements: Passenger, School Bus, and Air Brakes

Responsibilities

  • Providing safe transportation of students to and from school routes
  • Transporting general education and special education students
  • Assisting students with boarding and exiting the bus
  • Performing daily safety checks on the bus
  • Driving a school bus on designated routes, including picking up and dropping off students as scheduled
  • Assisting students with physical disabilities board and exit the bus
  • Assisting with seating and securing children in safety belts prior to operating the bus
  • Conducting and recording daily pre-trip checks on bus and bus components, including inspecting tires, lights, fuel level, oil levels, and windshield wipers
  • Reporting defective equipment immediately
  • Completing daily and monthly operations reports indicating times, mileage, and routes
  • Completing bus incident reports as necessary
  • Cleaning interior and exterior of bus by sweeping floors, dusting and washing seats, and cleaning windows
  • Performing special bus runs as needed, including evening runs
  • May serve as Dispatcher in a training capacity
  • Communicating with dispatcher supervisor utilizing two-way radio transmitter
  • Meeting with parents, teacher, principals, or other school officials on occasion to express and listen to concerns regarding bus operation, scheduling, and safety
  • Reporting violations of state school bus law (other drivers) as required
  • Performing other duties as assigned
