About The Position

James Irwin Charter Schools is committed to fostering academic excellence and character development in a supportive and challenging environment. We currently serve over 2,000 students in six schools across four campuses. We are seeking an experienced School Accountant to join our team. Position Summary The School Accountant supports the financial operations of the charter school by managing deposits, receivables, and school-level financial reporting. This position works closely with principals, assistant principals, and the Director of Finance to ensure accurate financial records, timely processing of transactions, and strong internal controls. The School Accountant plays a key role in supporting campus budgets and assisting with monthly and year-end close activities.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or related field required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of school finance experience required.
  • Experience with accounts payable, receivables, reconciliations, and general accounting processes.
  • Experience in K–12 education, public schools, or charter schools required.
  • Knowledge of purchasing procedures and financial controls.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial information.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with school leaders and staff.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of school budgets and site-based financial operations.
  • Knowledge of Colorado charter school or public-school financial practices preferred.
  • Ability to interpret financial data and prepare clear, useful reports for school leaders.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with the finance team and campus administrators.

Responsibilities

  • Support principals and assistant principals with budget monitoring, purchasing, and spending decisions.
  • Process purchasing card reconciliations in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Process all ACH payments.
  • Review and code invoices to ensure accuracy, proper account coding, and compliance with school procedures.
  • Verify that invoices have the required approvals and correct coding before payment.
  • Manage deposits, fundraising cash, and accounts receivable for the schools.
  • Maintain accurate records of collections, deposits, and outstanding receivables.
  • Provide school-level financial reports to school leaders and the Director of Finance.
  • Support the Director of Finance during month-end and year-end close.
  • Assist with audits, document collection, and financial record maintenance as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, school policies, and applicable financial procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
