About The Position

Under the supervision of Food Protection Supervisor, conducts routine inspections of various types of food establishments, reviews, analyses, and evaluates food establishments for compliance for the City of Dallas. Under the guidance of a Senior Sanitarian and the supervision of a Food Protection Supervisor, the Sanitarian I conducts routine inspections of various types of food establishments, reviews, analyses, and evaluates food establishments for compliance with the Texas Food Establishment Rules, the FDA Food Code, and the City of Dallas Code of Ordinances.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of food borne illnesses, cleanliness, and sanitation.
  • Ability to perform inspections and determine substandard practices and code violations.
  • Ability to issue citations and communicate with various individuals.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply health and safety codes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Skill to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to perform primary job duties in the field.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Natural or Environmental Sciences or a related field of study.
  • One (1) year combined experience inspecting restaurants, setting mosquito traps and/or inspecting swimming pools.
  • A valid driver's license with good driving record.
  • Must hold a license from the State of Texas as a Registered Professional Sanitarian or Registered Sanitarian Trainee in process of acquiring Registered Sanitarian license.
  • Must Be able to properly manage a food district with no more than a 5% overdue rate for at least 6 months.

Responsibilities

  • Performs inspections and monitors food establishments ensuring compliance with all food, health, and safety regulations and precautions; inspects pool and public areas to ensure they are environmentally safe and sustainable to promote public health and safety.
  • Facilitates and coordinates the process for issuing Food Establishment Permits, Mobile Food Permits, Farmers Market Permits, and Temporary Event Food Permits; reviews, checks, and ensures that all information provided and entered is correct and accurate; inspects to confirm all food establishments have a valid, current, and paid permit.
  • Interprets code regulations and educates citizens on regulations and guidelines.
  • Completes Food inspections and Risk assessments as assigned to meet division goals and works with registered Sanitarians to complete assignments; provides excellent customer service and provides insight, knowledge, and direction on health and safety codes, violations, and corrective actions.
  • Attends and participates in professional conference to refine knowledge base and remain up to date on current codes and regulations; develops and presents professional presentations trainees and subordinate personnel.
  • Assists with plan review new and upcoming construction projects involving food establishments service or bodies of water; identifies potential code compliance issues and makes necessary adjustments during planning process.
  • Reads educational and current material related environmental health and safety; initiates and performs coursework in the standardization process for inspectors and gathers certifications necessary for work assignments.
  • Performs follow up work for failing establishments, investigates complaints of citizens, and determines validity of complaint and corrective actions to take.
  • Performs other related work as needed or assigned.
