Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program Coordinator, the SANE RN will function as a member of the SANE Team. The SANE RN will provide timely, non-judgmental, compassionate care to the sexual assault victim.

Requirements

  • Current Registered Nurse Licensure or higher.
  • Minimum two years nursing experience; specialty experience in women’s health, emergency department or intensive care(preferred), with demonstrated autonomy and professional judgment in nursing practice.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license. Individual malpractice insurance required.
  • Within 6-12 months of employment ideally successful completion of recommended clinical components to include: Shadowing an experienced SANE and being shadowed, as able, observing in courtroom, as able with advocate staff, Proficient use of all equipment.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and with flexibility in days and hours of work.
  • Ability to lift individuals or assist them in transferring.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment, aptitude, and ability to work with the sexual assault victim population. Is sensitive to cultural differences and able to incorporate that understanding into service provision. Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend, climb stairs and lift objects of up to 10lbs as required.
  • Completion of 41 hour Online Training for SANE-A with International Association of Forensic Nurses (or hybrid didactic equivalent)
  • Completion of Clinical Skill Lab Training

Responsibilities

  • Performs a complete medical forensic evaluation to include head-to-toe medical assessment for trauma, detailed genital/anal examination, forensic specimen collection and supportive documentation, and photo documentation of bodily injuries with competent documentation.
  • Performs and document sexual assault medical forensic interviews/exams accurately and in timely fashion. Completes all necessary written reports, statistics, case files and summaries in a timely manner and in accordance with program and agency standards.
  • Ensures patient/medial record confidentiality at all times (HIPPA). Ensures documentation of health services is provided to each program according to agency policy, coordinates maintenance of current client medical records. Conducts staff training in areas of universal precautions, seizures, OSHA regulations, and other pertinent medical areas.
  • Provides medical-forensic exam, recommend prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, and conducts photographic documentation.
  • Offers appropriate referrals for medical and psychological follow-up, support and participation in legal proceedings.
  • Maintains active SANE RN status through on-going SANE professional development opportunities.
  • Participates in regular SANE staff meetings and trainings.
  • Assess for mandatory reporting status and report when appropriate.
  • Maintains chain of custody and adhere to evidence guidelines.
  • Maintains professional standards that do not create conflict of interests with employment or patient care.
  • Testifies as fact witness to any/all cases performed while contracted as a SANE (Following employment or termination it will remain to be an obligation of the individual RN to respond and coordinate with attorneys prior to and during the court process.
  • Provides services in a manner which is culturally competent. Empowers clients by using clients’ cultural strengths and informal support networks in service delivery.
  • Participation in on-call monthly, to include shared holiday and weekend coverage.
  • Maintains effective professional relationships with other service providers and community organizations in the interest of clients’ and program goals.
  • Identifies and reports on Untoward Incidents as required.
  • Carries out Agency policies and procedures.
  • Attends and participates in individual supervisory conferences, staff meetings, training sessions and professional development opportunities as required. Maintains required program certifications.
  • Performs other duties, responsibilities and related tasks as assigned.
