About The Position

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Associate Director of the Saltman Center and Assistant Professor-in-Residence [R0150548] ROLE of the POSITION The Associate Director of the Saltman Center for Conflict Resolution position is a full-time, 12-month academic faculty position, Faculty-in-Residence, at the William S. Boyd School of Law at UNLV. Since its establishment within the law school in 2003 the Saltman Center’s dispute resolution program at Boyd has been ranked among the top ten law school programs in the country by U.S. News and World Report. The Saltman Center is the only university Center housed at the Boyd School of Law. The Saltman Center has an institutional commitment to the law school’s own dispute resolution legal education and also a strong public service mission for the university and wider community. The Saltman Center offers opportunities for students to learn through coursework and experiential learning and also develops innovative programs to educate and support local and broader communities in developing and implementing conflict resolution and prevention practices. The Associate Director’s primary responsibilities will be law student teaching and advising, developing and implementing professional education programs, and administration of various aspects of the Saltman Center’s programming. The Associate Director will build and maintain a diverse and multifaceted dispute resolution curriculum for J.D. students and will support and advise students seeking to complete an academic concentration in dispute resolution. Course offerings and teaching load will be determined on an annual basis in consultation with Saltman Directors. Other teaching includes direct supervision and coaching of teams competing in regional and national dispute resolution competitions. The Associate Director will also build and maintain professional education programs, such as a dispute resolution certificate or other professional training programs with the goal of creating new and sustainable funding streams to support the work of the Saltman Center. The Associate Director will also be responsible for contributing to the Saltman Center’s commitment to providing public education through continuing legal education programs, lectures, conferences, and other speaker events. The Associate Director will be a fully integrated member of the Boyd Law School faculty with teaching and service responsibilities that reflect and bolster the work of the Saltman Center. Writing and producing original research or scholarship is not an essential function of this position.

Requirements

  • bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and a JD. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start date.
  • At least 10 years of experience as a dispute resolution practitioner, seven to nine years of supervisory and management experience.
  • academic and practice experience in the field of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and a strong academic record.
  • Completed a variety of ADR trainings and certification programs.
  • a background in legal systems and legal practice, including but not limited to representation of clients.
  • understand the market and interest in dispute resolution certificate program and use that information to design and launch a certificate program.
  • excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • demonstrated skill as an effective ADR practitioner and third-party neutral.
  • able to plan and coordinate programs.
  • able to work effectively with a team and also independently.
  • able to coordinate with different administrators, staff, and department contacts in the law school and around campus.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience teaching, training, mentoring (including experience with structured feedback as teaching methodology); experience managing academic or similar programs.
  • knowledgeable about different ADR processes and how they interact with formal legal systems.
  • an understanding of budgeting and costs when it comes to allocating resources to new programs
  • experience managing projects and supervising teams.
